Muskingum County adds another fallen hero to a local monument.

The name of South Zanesville Firefighter Richard Guss Senior was etched into the stone of the Fallen Guardians Monument in front of the courthouse.

He's just the third firefighter in the county to die in the line of duty. Guss, who was also the Mayor of South Zanesville, died in December after he suffered an injury returning from a fire.

Guss slipped on the running board of the fire engine, landing on his back and striking his head on the apparatus floor.

He was removed from life support a few days later.

HIs name joins other fallen heroes Robert Tanner, Michael Lutz, Lawrence Savage, Gregory Rogers, Irving Tate and Henry Ritchason.

Saturday May 10, at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge the annual Peace Officer Memorial will take place to honor fallen heroes. The event begins at 10 a.m.
