The First Annual Dick Guss Memorial Golf Outing took place Saturday morning at the Eaglesticks Golf Course.
Despite the rainy conditions 26 teams showed up at 9AM to tee off. The outing was commemorative of the life and memory of Dick Guss, a volunteer fire fighter who died tragically last December while on duty. He was well known by both South Zanesville as well as Newton Township fire departments.
"Dick was one of the guys, if the pager went off, he was there 24/7. Seven days a week, it didn't matter what the weather was he showed up on time, every time," said Golf Chairman Russell Taylor. "He would leave his wife at a restaurant eating just to make a call, he just loved it with all his heart and he's been greatly missed since he's been gone."
The golf outing was originally an event for the South Zanesville Fire Department with Newton Township fire partnering up with the event just last year. Both departments saw it fitting to rename the outing in honor of Dick Guss.
"Dick was the village. He was the Mayor of the village. In the evenings and summer time he would be sitting in front of the fire house. Everyone would drive by, everyone would wave, honk their horns. He'd wave back, that's just how he's spend his time," said Norm Mansfield, South Zanesville Fire Chief. "He was retired from out of the Glass House. Joined the fire department later in life. He didn't join until he was 42 years old. And he really put his heart and soul into it after he joined."
Proceeds from the event go toward both Newton Township and South Zanesville Fire Departments. In honor of Guss, proceeds will also go toward the Fallen Fire Fighters Association.
