Boy Scout leaders are calling all Muskingum Valley Council troops to duty.

Local veterans need their help in placing hundreds of flags on the graves of their fallen comrades. This Saturday, boys can provide service while learning from a few of our country's bravest citizens.

"We think that it's great to instill in our young people the value of that fact that these folks have died in service of their country. Even as doing something as simple as putting a flag on their grave, it does show a great deal of honor and teaches respect for our young people, " said Jeff Pickett, District Director of the Boy Scouts of America.

Scouts can meet at either Greenwood cemetery at 8:30 a.m. or Memorial Park off of Military Road at 9 a.m. to begin the process. Once there some troops will be sent to other cemeteries in the area depending on the need. According to leaders, past participants say the experience is humbling.

" I think it really is." said Pickett. " They find it very rewarding as they interact with some of the veterans who have their own stories and they share them with the scouts they realize these aren't just tombstones in the graveyard. "

Boy Scouts have performed this act of service in our area for the past six years and encourage anyone to come out on Saturday to help. This activity is a part of the newly implemented Operation Honor Program and the boy scouts will be designing a new patch for future participants.
