The Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol said nearly 400 cars passed through their sobriety checkpoint on Maple Avenue Friday night.

The checkpoint was held between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. just north of Kay Drive. Despite a large volume of vehicles, Lt. Matt Boyd said the troopers encountered virtually no issues with drivers.

"We made contact with 383 people in the checkpoint," Boyd said. "We did not get any impaired drivers out of the checkpoint. We didn't have to divert the drivers where we have someone pull off the roadway."

Just because efforts were focused on the checkpoint, Boyd said that doesn't mean they aren't on the lookout for impaired drivers in other areas. Several officers were on saturation patrol at other locations to stop those who were drinking and driving from Wednesday night through Saturday night.

"During that four day time, just from 6:00 p.m. in the evening to 4:00 a.m. in the morning, in those four days we had 326 traffic stops, and we got 11 impaired drivers off the roadway in Muskingum County, and we had three cases," Boyd said. "Two of them were drug cases and then one of them was a fleeing case."

Both the checkpoint and saturation points were done in conjunction with the Zanesville Police Department and the Muskingum County Sheriff's office.
