Ohio University Zanesville and Zane State College held an active shooter drill on their campuses Friday.

The safety event brought together observers and 10 different emergency agencies from across the area. Director of Public Safety, Bethany Hayes says that training like this is incredibly relevant in todays day and age.

"In today's day and age I mean it is very very relevant. 74 shootings have happened since Sandy Hook in December of 2012. So we have to be vigilant, we have to understand that this is a possibility. It's realistic, not only in our schools but we're seeing this happen everywhere. Malls, churches, playgrounds and I mean it's not uncommon to see it on the news media every day."

The drill allowed those participating to watch and experience what it might be like to deal with an incident such as this one. The goal was to educate those who took part so they could take the information back to their community and make plans of their own. Dr. Paul Brown, President of Zane State College says it brings their campus a sense of preparedness.

"I feel that after today the college is much more prepared and we can then go forward to prepare the rest of the community for an emergency situation which we hope will never happen."

The event ran from 8AM to 12M.
