Buying school supplies can be difficult for some families and Eastside Community Ministry is taking steps to lighten the load for those who might be struggling to check everything off the list.
Today, Tools for Schools held a Stuff the Bus event where they asked shoppers at the North Walmart to purchase an item and donate it to local children in need. Volunteer with Tools for Schools Rose Kessing said that many people need the extra help to get their children prepared for the academic year.
"Well it seems that every year people find it harder and harder to go and purchase the items that are on the list and afford it," said Kessing. "It seems like they're getting more expensive every year."
The organization will fill 865 backpacks with all the necessities for the school year. From pencils to paper and everything in between, the applicants who signed up just a few weeks ago will receive their supplies in time for that first day of school. Kessing said they will continue the event in the coming years.
"So every year we need to do this so that kids will be prepared for the next school year," said Kessing.
If you would like to donate to tools for schools but missed the event today, you can still make monetary donations or supply donations at the Eastside Community Ministry. Those supplies will then go toward next year's students in need.
