Household Hazardous Waste Collections

Hazardous Waste

When we think of hazardous waste, things like oil, batteries and rat poison may not immediately pop into our minds...But they can still cause problems if not properly disposed.

That's why the City of Zanesville, Muskingum County Commissioners, and the Southeastern Ohio Joint Solid Waste Management District have partnered up to host a household hazardous waste collection day.

"This is for, like I said, the paints, any old gasolines, and certainly if you have any old mercury items in your garage," said Dave Markley, Zanesville Wastewater Superintendent. "The EPA is getting very strict on our effluent that we discharge here to the river.  We would like to get those things out of the system, and that's what this is for."

The collection day will take place this Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the OUZ / Zane State campus parking lot.  While Markley said they are equipped to treat the water that comes through that may be contaminated, it's still a lot safer for both the environment and their employees if people throw out the items at events like this instead of dumping them down a drain.

"We don't want to see those types of things, pesticides, herbicides.  If we can restrict it--we do remove it here, but if we can get it out of the system and help our employees here not be around those type things, then yes, this is a great event to get it out of the system."

If you have questions regarding what all items will be collected on Saturday, you can call Markley at the water treatment plant by calling 740-455-0641.
