Two Newark women were sent to the hospital following an accident near the Y-Bridge Monday afternoon.
According to police, the accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. when a Chevy Lumina that was heading toward the Y-Bridge on West Main Street went off the left side of the roadway, through a grass field at a high rate of speed, and crashed over the emankment of the river. The vehicle flipped several times before coming to rest right beside the river.
According to Lt. Bill Shaw of the Zanesville Police Department, both female occupants of the vehicle were transported by Genesis to Good Samaritan Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Lt. Shaw says the women told police they were trying to pull up to get a scenic view of the water under the bridge, but he says that story simply isn't adding up. Zanesville Fire Department assisted ZPD at the scene. Still no word on the names of the vehicle's occupants. The accident remains under investigation.
