Some wild rides Saturday afternoon, as the Wilds played host to an adventure of a different kind. The Hummer Happening was a first to be held in Cumberland. The event invited six hummer dealerships from around the state to take part in a four-mile path, complete with obstacles.

The federal government has awarded a $1.1 million bonus to Ohio’s adoption program. The bonus is for increasing the number of children who were placed in homes last year. More than 90% of the children adopted last year through the adoption program were special-needs children. The bonus will be split among the county agencies, which use the money to recruit and provide support to new adoptive families.

Veterans who served on the USS Intrepid gather tonight in Coshocton. This is the tenth annual reunion of former Intrepid crewmembers from the Ohio-Michigan area. The ship, now a museum in New York City, served the Navy from the 1940s to the 1980s. The old crewmembers get together every year in Coshocton, this year making a small bell-ringing memorial for those who have passed away. The Buckeyes may have been playing football this afternoon, but many Zanesville youngsters were playing hockey. The Columbus Blue Jackets caravan tour made its final stop at the Colony Square Mall today in conjunction with a card show put on by WHIZ. Police now have arrested 22-year-old Derek Norris in connection with the shooting death of Bradley Barnett. According to an Indiana newspaper, Norris made a phone call to an ex-girlfriend in Wyoming who alerted authorities to his whereabouts. As a result, Detective Ric Roush with the ZPD says Norris was apprehended at a Motel 8 in Richmond, Indiana around 3:00 Friday morning. Roush says deputies with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office surrounded the hotel, but Norris refused to come out....

Plans are connecting together nicely for the much anticipated 146-60 Connector Road project. Ongoing talks with property owners and the city have been productive. A developer is now part of the project, and is already working to implement a possible site plan. The next step in the project is for the city to direct the Transportation Improvements District Board to facilitate construction. The Zanesville City Council will face an ordinance about this Monday.

Driving home their pledge of building strong kids, families and communities, the Cambridge Area YMCA is upgrading facilities. The site for the new facility is the former Cambridge High School building. In a public meeting held Friday morning, officials explained the future of the new building. Since its inception in 1948, the YMCA has housed several venues. This renovated facility will be a modern, one-story building furnished with state-of-the-art equipment.

There’s a big decline in Ohio’s unemployment rate in August. But state officials caution against reading too much into this. The rate was 5.8% in August. That’s down from a revised July figure of 6.3%. Tom Hayes is the director of the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. He says while the number of unemployed workers is lower, so is overall unemployment. The number of unemployed workers fell in August to 338,000 from 371,000.

The Highway Patrol is investigating a Thursday accident that happened in Perry County. An area woman had to be Med-Flighted to the hospital as a result. Troopers say 43-year-old Ronald Matheny Jr. of Crooksville was driving a truck south on State Route 13 when he struck a car driven by 83-year-old Wilma Jones of Thornville. Investigators say Jones failed to yield at a stop sign while traveling east on State Route 204. Matheny was injured and treated at the scene by medics. Jones was...

After ten years, Ohio University President Robert Glidden says he will retire in June. The university’s 19th president made the announcement during his annual state of the university address. The 66-year-old assumed the presidency in 1994. Previously, he served as provost and vice-president of academic affairs at Florida State University. The Iowa native also was a faculty member at Wright State University, Indiana University, The University of Oklahoma and Bowling Green State University.
