It was a noteworthy surprise today for Zanesville firefighter John Benson. He knew that he had been invited to speak to the Kiwanis Club on behalf of the fire department Wednesday afternoon, but what he didn't know, he was actually there to receive a special award. Benson was honored as an "Unsung Hero". Amy Pinson, Chairperson for the award, says Benson was the perfect recipient this month. The Newark Police Department broke ground today.. literally. It’s in the form of a new facility that will be built by 2005. Today marks a milestone for the community of Newark and represents a commitment made by the city. This 8 million dollar project will be a state of the art facility centrally located in downtown Newark.

With the count up to 12 now in the number of shootings on Interstate 270 just outside Columbus, police are warning drivers to become more aware of their surroundings. For those who have to drive on the 5-mile stretch of highway being targeted, it is suggested that you proceed with caution. Officials are now questioning a person in the shooting that occurred last night on a northern Ohio turnpike. Two people were traveling near Milan when they were wounded by gunfire. The State Highway Patrol says no charges have been filed for now. 29-year-old Stephen McMullen of East Cleveland has a head wound and is being treated at St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center in Toledo. Deputies and community members in Eaton Ohio are in shock today over the death of Preble County Sheriff Thomas Hayes. Hayes died early this morning after becoming ill at work Tuesday afternoon. He was rushed to a Dayton hospital where he expired a little after one o'clock this morning after several hours of emergency surgery for an aneurysm at Miami Valley Hospital. Funeral arrangements are pending for Hayes, he was 49 years old.

A Columbus woman is dead today after a fire ripped through her home last night. Firefighters were unable to reach 73-year-old Alice Runyan in time. Runyan's granddaughter, 19-year-old Amy Stump who lived with her was rescued from the home by her father. He lives nearby, and saw the flames. He reached the scene before fire crews arrived. The identity of a Kent State student found dead in her dorm room Tuesday has not yet been released. The 29-year-old student was found in her room by campus officials. Relatives apparently hadn't heard from the woman in several weeks, so they contacted dormitory staff and asked them to check on her last night. The cause and time of her death are still under investigation.

Four bank robbery suspects were involved in a high speed pursuit with police Tuesday. One was killed in the chase and three others were injured after the S-U-V the suspects were driving hit a pickup truck head on in Columbus. Pataskala Police began chasing the suspects yesterday morning when they believed they were involved in a robbery of the First Federal Savings and Loan Bank. Another turnpike shooting incident, however this one is 90 miles north of Columbus where eleven other shootings are being investigated. According to the State Highway Patrol, a driver and passenger were shot and wounded last night while they were traveling in northern Ohio on the turnpike.
