A chemical company accused of improperly removing asbestos when it renovated its plant in Circleville is to pay a $23,000 penalty. The state Environmental Protection Agency says it settled the EI Dupont De Nemours Company for violations during the six-month project starting in May 2002. The EPA says Dupont failed to douse bags of asbestos it removed from the facility, which is a violation of state regulations. Wetting the asbestos ensures that particles don’t escape into the air. The future is something we all think about. What will it be like and when are those flying cars going to get here? A Smithsonian exhibit coming to the McIntire library shows the ideas of the future from the 1950s. The “Yesterday’s Tomorrow” exhibit has been traveling the state of Ohio and will make a stop in Zanesville beginning this Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until noon. A local pioneer and aviation hero is honored this morning at the Zanesville Municipal Airport. Charles “Gene” Griffin began flying in the mid 1930s. He flew stunt shows and began training American and French pilots for WWII. His friends say this dedication will be an inspiration for pilots to come. A local sculptor reports he has half the needed funds for his proposed memorial. Alan Cottrill spoke to the Muskingum County Commissioners this morning. He let them know he’s raised over $87,000 toward his WWII/Korean War Memorial. The funds paid for the three bronze statues outside VFW post 1058 in Putnam. Rioting partiers at an annual Athens Halloween bash started street fights, lit couches on fire and threw bottles at officers during what police called “the worst event to date.” Athens police chief Rick Mayor said police arrested 66 people overnight Saturday and responded to nearly 20 fights and at least five fires. Another local community event that will be coming to our area is that Soroptimists’ Annual Charity Auction. There will be many great prizes to be auctioned off, but one in particular is special to community. Proceeds from this year’s auction will benefit the Soroptimists’ dental trailer which provides dental services to elementary schoolchildren in Zanesville. It was a picture perfect afternoon…for pets that is. The PAWS group teamed up with Pictures Plus to offer area pet owners the opportunity to get their picture taken with their pets. Some senior citizens in the area were cooking up a good recipe today. The Muskingum County Senior Task Force had their annual “recipe for retirement” offering a sampling of food and entertainment from local vendors. Terry Dunn, executive director of the Muskingum County center for seniors says the event has improved a lot, surpassing many expectations. All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Senior Task Force for upcoming programs in the community.

A local family had a “smoking” celebration today at the Zanesville Fire Department. After placing the highest bid on the fire department’s party package at the Carr Center’s cake auction, the Dierkes family finally were able to enjoy what they paid for. The Dierkes family was initially attracted to this party package for various reasons. The Zanesville fire department will continue to auction off creative packages in the future.
