Michael G. ''Mick'' Norris, 57 of Zanesville, died at 10:20 AM, Friday, June 26, 2009 at his residence.
He was born Thursday, May 08, 1952 in Zanesville, the son of Raymond W. and Mary Ellen (Whikehart) Norris. He married Sara E. (Rank) Norris on Saturday, August 30, 1975 and was a lifelong member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Mick attended St. Thomas Elementary School and graduated from Bishop Rosecrans High School in 1970. He attended MATC and Bowling Green State University. Mick was employed by the City of Zanesville, the Norfolk and Western Railroad, and Hart’s Family Center. He retired from Columbia Gas of Ohio in 2007 as a Service Technician following almost thirty years of service. Mick was most recently employed as an Engineering Technician by United Technology International Corporation. Mick was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Ohio, Knights of Columbus Council 505, and United Commercial Travelers. Mick was a very generous man and donated his time and supported both to his church and his community. He served as a co-chairman for the St. Thomas Parish Festivals for many years and served as President of St. Thomas School’s PTO. Mick willingly assisted with St. Thomas’ and Rosecrans’ activities and sporting programs. Mick enjoyed movies, science fiction, a variety of musical styles, history and railroad memorabilia. His hobbies included bike riding, camping, wood carving, and, most importantly, spending time with friends and family. Mick was naturally inquisitive. He never met a stranger. Mick had a kind and gentle way with everyone, especially children, animals, and anyone who needed help. His family and friends will greatly miss his unique sense of humor. Mick had a beautiful inner strength that allowed him to fight a courageous battle against renal cancer without ever losing his Faith. He demonstrated Faith through his actions. Mick was a regular blood donor and an advocate for organ and tissue donation and bone marrow registration. His favorite charities included the Falls Township Fire Department, The Muskingum County Animal Shelter Society, the American Cancer Society, St. Thomas Parish, Bishop Rosecrans High School, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
In addition to his wife, Mick is survived by two sons: Ben (Jen) Norris of Columbus & Ted Norris of Zanesville; an infant granddaughter: Althea Jane Norris; two brothers: Tim (Helen) Norris of Columbus and Walter ''Butch'' (Ann) Norris of Zanesville; one sister: Raye Ellen (Dan) Nixon of Mt. Vernon; his pet dog: ''Jackie"; many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 Sunday, June 28, 2009 at The Hillis & Hardwick Funeral Home, 935 Forest Avenue where a Christian Vigil Service will be held at 3:45 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Monday, June 29 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Fr. Pius Pietrzyk, O.P. as Celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to any of Mick’s favorite charities in Mick's name. Mick’s love for life will be celebrated by an Irish Wake at the K of C Hall following services.
