Dr. John Walker Ray, 73, of Zanesville, died at 1:05 PM Tuesday June 23, 2009 at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital Emergency Room.
He was born January 12, 1936 in Columbus, OH the son of the late Kenneth C. and Hope Walker Ray. He was Veteran of the US Air Force serving as a medical officer with the rank of Captain. His education background includes: A.B., magna cum laude, Marietta College, 1956, M.D., magna cum laude, The Ohio State University College of Medicine, 1960. Internships include: The Ohio State University Hospitals, Department of Surgery, 1960-1961, United States Air Force, Captain, 1961-1963, Clinical Research Trainee, National Institute of Health, 1963-1965, Resident, Department of Otolaryngology, The Ohio State University, 1963-1967, Professor 1966- 2000 Department of Otolaryngology, The Ohio State University. Active Medical Staffs 1967- 2000 at his retirement: Bethesda Hospital and Good Samaritan Medical Center where he was Chief of Staff in 1986.
He was a Diplomate, American Board of Otolaryngology, 1969, Fellow, American College of Surgeons, Fellow, American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Fellow, American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, member of Ohio State Medical Association, American Medical Association, Past President, Ohio State Ear, Nose and Throat Society, Delegate, Ohio State Medical Association, Delegate, American Medical Association, President, Columbus Ophthalmological and Otolaryngological Society, Charter member, National Association of Physician Broadcasters, Board of Trustees, Bethesda Hospital, Listed in: Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering and Who’s Who in American Education, member of Phi Beta Kappa, Kentucky Colonel and Tennessee Squire.
Dr. Ray founded S.E.O. Otolaryngology and partnered with Dr. Jack Booth. John did television and radio commentary for “Health Beat” on WHIZ-TV and Radio. He always ended his show with saying “Hoping you have a good today and a better tomorrow”. He was an ordained Elder, Central Presbyterian Church, Zanesville, OH where he was also active in the choir. He also contributed to multiple medical publications. John was a songwriter of gospel and bluegrass music, member of a bluegrass band called Hickory Wind, Muskingum County Country Music Hall of Fame, Avid Ohio State Buckeye fan, member of Zanesville High School Quarterback Club, Ohio State University Presidents Club. John was a great joke and story teller who loved animals and caring for his rose garden.
Dr. Ray is survived by his wife: Susanne Gettings Ray whom he married July 15, 1961, daughters: Nancy (John) Page of Columbus and Christy (Dr. Tom) Paumier of Canton, grandson: Grayson Gettings Page, sister: Beverly (Dan) Klincko of Canton, GA, brother-in-law: David (Johanna) Gettings of Williamstown, WV, niece: Shannon (Rev. Aaron) Gooden of Hurricane, WV, Kelle (Matt) Ford of Canton, GA, nephew: Kyle (Heather) Klincko of Sugarhill, GA and cousin: Dr. Clark (Joyce) Bowman of Charleston, SC.
Preceding him in death were his parents and Aunt Mildred Ray Bowman.
Family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 Friday June 26, 2009 at Bryan & Snider Funeral Home 2318 Maple Ave. Zanesville, OH.
Memorial service will be 11:00 AM Saturday June 27, 2009 at Central Presbyterian Church, 6th Street, Zanesville, OH with Pastor Ray Morrison officiating.
