Margaret Harlan, age 81 of Zanesville passed to eternal rest on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at 8:15 a.m. following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born July 20, 1928 the ninth of eleven children born to Lewis R. and Mary Gillespie Northrop at New Lexington, Ohio she spent the majority of her life as a resident of Zanesville. She spent over 35 years as an area homebuilder and loved designing and overseeing the construction of her creations she and her husband built. Her life’s passions revolved around her large family of many siblings, her husband and her children. She loved cooking, sewing and gardening. She spent many years as a volunteer in a variety of school and church functions involving her children. She was an avid card player and was Methodist by faith.

She was married to Harry J. Harlan on July 4, 1946 and the two had just celebrated their 63rd anniversary. She is survived by her husband, a son Thomas (Cheryl) Harlan of Zanesville; daughter Connie Harlan of Worthington, OH; four grandchildren: Christopher Harlan of Ashburn, VA, Julia Harlan of Toledo, OH, Ben Harlan and Abby Harlan of Zanesville as well as many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her “adopted” daughter, Linda Lawter of Graham, NC and her special nephew Robert (Gerry) Gardner who were at her side during her last months.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Ronald Alan Harlan of Zanesville, four brothers: Luster L. (Lew) Northrop, Paul E. (Zeke) Northrop, William W. Northrop and Clarence R. Northrop, all of Zanesville; six sisters: Virgie Pennel of Chauncey, OH, Ada Spurbeck, Edith (Pat) Gardner, Allie Esther Northrop, Betty (John) Kinkead and Garnet Paul.

Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Tuesday November 10, 2009 at Bryan and Snider Funeral Home, 2318 Maple Ave. Graveside services will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery, Zanesville with Dr. Herbert R. Hicks officiating.
