Raymond “Gene” Baker, 68, of Philo passed away at Genesis Hospice & Palliative Care Thursday, January 6, 2011, surrounded by family and friends. Gene was born in Muskingum County, January 7, 1942 to the late Robert Elsworth and Evelyn Phillips Baker. Gene & his deceased wife, Ruth, owned and operated Baker’s Carry Out & Nascar on Main Street in Duncan Falls for 25 years. Gene was also employed for 28 years at the Ohio Ferro-Alloy in Philo.
He is survived by his sons: Jay (Traci) of Blue Rock, Mark (Julie) of Philo and Deron (Katy) of Virginia, his brothers; John Baker of Zanesville, Glen Baker of Lindsey, Oh.; Uncle Gerry Baker of Cleveland, Oh, grandchildren: Erin (James) Work, Ali, Britni, Kayla, Kelsey, Nathan, Kelly, Allison, Mary Kate, Robbie, Jimmy, Annie and Joey Baker and 1 great- grandchild, Emerson Work. Gene would also like to pay special mention to his in-laws: Jeanette Hennessy, Charlie Harmon, Deb & Jim Irwin, Tommy & Norma Harmon, Nellie Christman and Gary Harmon.
In addition to his parents, Gene was preceded in death by his wife Ruth Harmon Baker who passed away Feb. 8, 2007.
Gene and Ruth enjoyed their winters in Florida together thanks to Charlie, Rose and Carla who helped run the store while they were gone. Gene was proud of playing baseball until the age of 48, starting with the Phi-Duncs and the Zane Greys. He was especially fond of his Zane Grey teammates and cherished those days until the end. He also loved to work in his yard where he spent countless hours on what he considered a true labor of love.
Calling hours will be 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. Saturday, January 8, 2010 at THE SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME, 1150 W. MILITARY RD., ZANESVILLE, OH. Services will be 2 P.M. Sunday, January 9 in the Snouffer Chapel with Gene’s friend, Mike Danison speaking. Burial will be in Duncan Falls Cemetery at a later date.
Following services friends & family will gather at Jay Baker’s home.
