James A. Phipps (Jim), 98, of Zanesville, died at 1:37 p.m. on Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at the Cedar Hill Care Center in Zanesville, Ohio. He had been a resident of the Abbott Home on Greenwood Avenue in Zanesville for two years before he moved to Cedar Hill, a few months ago. He was born on December 4, 1914 in Greene County, Indiana, the eldest child of William Jesse Phipps and Florence A. Huffman Phipps. Jim's parents and all of his siblings (Grace Sybesma, Harold Phipps, William Jr. Phipps, Ruth Jeter and Leon Bennett) have preceded him in death. His dear wife, Margaret F. Thomas Phipps, died of cancer in 1976.
Surviving are five of his children, J. Leon Phipps (Dottie), Sue Gill (Don), Donald Dale Phipps (Susan), Bruce D. Phipps (Janet) and Gary L. Phipps (Tiffany). One son, Roy L. Phipps died a hero in Vietnam in 1970. Also surviving are thirteen grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.
Jim had worked as a farmer, strip mine shovel oiler, salesman, furniture store owner and at many other occupations. After retirement he spent many winters in Florida. He enjoyed being outdoors and keeping active.
Visiting hours will be from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 2013 at THE SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME, 1150 W MILITARY RD., ZANESVILLE. Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the funeral home with his grandson, The Reverend David Bennett officiating. James will be laid to rest next to his wife in Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
