Mary Lois Lacy Huffman, 87, of Norwich, rose to Heaven to be with her family, ancestors, and friends at 2:50 a.m. on Monday, March 11, 2013, at Emeritus at North Hills. She was born on November 12, 1925, in Chicago, Illinois, while her parents were on furlough from the Korean mission field. Mary was the daughter of Rev. John Veere and Mary Appenzeller Lacy and was a grandchild of Rev. Henry Appenzeller, who was a pioneer in opening Korea to Christianity. Mary graduated from South High School in Columbus after attending her 8th, 9th and 10th grades in Zanesville, where her father was the minister at Central Trinity Methodist Church. Mary graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1948, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Religious Education. While at Ohio Wesleyan, she met her loving husband Walker; they were married on December 21, 1947.
Mary was employed as a stenographer at Battelle Institute and at The Ohio State University while her husband completed his degree after serving in World War II. Mary then centered her life on raising their family with abiding love and care. In 1981, Mary accompanied Walker overseas, where he was employed by the United States Department of Labor as a consultant to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in establishing their vocational-technical system. While in Saudi Arabia, Mary did secretarial work at the British Military Hospital and for the Kingdom’s Ministry of Finance and Information.
Mary and Walker were avid world travelers during their senior years as they circumnavigated the earth three times, visiting 40 foreign countries; they also completed tours of all of the 50 United States. Mary lived the majority of her life in Zanesville, where all of her five children graduated from Zanesville High School. Mary was active in the Grace United Methodist Church, attending Sunday School and Sunday Church regularly. The church and family were the cornerstone of her life. Mary was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Olive Branch Chapter of the Eastern Star, Author’s Club, and the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, Walker Huffman; five loyal and loving children, Jennifer Ellen (William) Stewart, Craig Moore (Judy) Huffman, Deborah Ann Huffman Mirib, Mary Lynne (Gary) Cohen and Steffanie Lee Huffman Kaib; ten current generation grandchildren, Brian Walker (Caitlin) Stewart, Amy Elizabeth Stewart (Brian) Smith, Allison Marie Stewart (Jonah) Barasz, Craig Moore Huffman, Jr., Jessica Lynne Stewart (Corey) Doak, Ashley Nicole Kaib, Lesley Norma Cohen, David Tanner Stewart, Jennifer Ann Cohen, and Kevin Andrew Kaib; seven great- grandchildren; Kendalyn Lacylee Kaib Swartz, Blake Benjamin Kaib Swartz, Makayla Elizabeth Stewart, Toyba Leah Barasz, Andrew Walker Stewart, Makenzie Marian Smith, Jacob Andrew Lee Schultz, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Alice Lorna (Charles Wilton) Short; and two brothers, John Veere Lacy, Jr., and David Appenzeller (Helen Elizabeth Marr) Lacy.
Friends and family may call from 5-8 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, 2013, at THE SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME, 1150 WEST MILITARY ROAD, ZANESVILLE and one hour prior to services. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 15, 2013, in the Snouffer Chapel with Rev. Steve McGuire officiating. Mary will be laid to rest in Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
