Vera Lucille Kirkland Duff, 96, passed away March 24th, 2014. She was born October 18th, 1917 in Key, Ohio; the daughter of the late Samuel Boyd and Lavella Giffen Kirkland. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Irwin McCall Duff, who died November 27th, 1995. They were married March 11th, 1944. She is also preceded by one brother, Lee Arnold Kirkland, who died January 24th, 1993.
She graduated from Shadyside High School and Muskingum College. She was a retired elementary school teacher; starting her career in Bloomfield, Ohio for two years. Continuing her career, she taught in Bellaire, Ohio for six years, returning to the East Muskingum Local School District to complete her thirty year career.
Vera was a sixty eight year member of the College Drive Presbyterian Church, where she served as an elder and taught nursery school for many years. She was an Honorary Life Member of the Women of the Presbyterian Church USA, Martha Roy Circle, and Covenant Adult Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Mother's Club I for 65 years, Rebekah Lodge #848, Friends of the New Concord Branch Library, Muskingum County Retired Teachers Association, and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association.
She is survived by her three daughters, Julie (Ken) McGee, Joyce Rothacker, and Vera Jolene Gibson; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will take place at the College Drive Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 29th at 11AM. The family will greet friends and relatives one hour prior to service. Services will be officiated by Pastor Keith Taylor and Pastor Tim Pollock. The internment will be private. Farus Funeral Home of New Concord, formerly Mock-Miller Funeral Home, has been entrusted with the services.
