Picking out a baby name is stressful. 5-year-old Brandon Rush's parents went down to the week before he was born before deciding.
"It takes a lot of thought process, whatever you give him that's what his name's going to be for the rest of his life, so there's a little bit of pressure there to have a decent name," says Don Rush, parent.
If you're looking for a unique name, here are some to stay away from. The Social Security administration reports last year's top five names for boys were: Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Alexander and William. Popular girls names were anything that ends in "a": Isabella, Emma, Olivia, Sophia and Ava.
Brandon Rush came within days of being named Blaze, but his parents looked for some inspiration at their local library.
"We came and got the books from the library just like everybody else does, the baby book names, and flipped through random names of all of them but Brandon's what we decided on," says Don Rush.
Baby name books are actually one of the most popular collections at the Muskingum County Libraries. They have books that can give you name meanings, literary references, even the most popular names by country or state.
"A great thing about it is people can borrow them. Certainly having a baby is an expensive process for a long time and this is something that many people don't need long term, but they can borrow, they can photo copy, they can use as a resource and just return back to the library," says Blair Tom, Muskingum County Library System.
The library also more than 100 magazine subscriptions so you can flip through the pages and try to think of baby names.
"We have resources for parents-to-be, new parents, parenting kinds of magazines, baby magazines," says Tom. "At this building we have over 100 titles at our main library and at the branches I would say we probably have in the range of 15 to 20 titles."
Everything baby-related is so popular, they're frequently unreturned. So the library works to keep the materials in stock.
"It's a part of that collection that we know people want so we continually replace and keep up-to-date. Names sort of go in and out vogue so it's good to have current materials and we know it's a part of the collection that needs to be pretty rich and full," he says.
And in case you were wondering my baby's name will be Grant Michael. Grant is my husband's grandfather's name and father's middle name. Michael is my father's middle name.
