The Blue Devils almost woke up their disappointing season.
Playing at 10:30 am on Saturday, Zanesville couldn't hold a 12 point lead, losing to Lakewood St. Edward 55-51 in round one of the Flyin' to the Hoops Tournament in Dayton.
The Eagles are ranked 10th in the first AP Division I state poll, which came out this week.
The loss was third straight for ZHS (4-8), which has dropped two consecutive games in the final 1:30.
"Thanks for reminding me," ZHS coach Scott Aronhalt said.
Zanesville led by nine at halftime following seven first half three-pointers. Senior guard Drake Aronhalt made five of those for 19 first half points. He led ZHS with 25 points.
But the Blue Devils struggled after the intermission mainly because they didn't make any three-pointers in the second half.
"They let Drake get open looks at the basket in the first half," Aronhalt said. "When he's open, he's a pretty good player. They didn't let him have those kind of looks in the second half."
According to the stat sheet, Zanesville made 12-19 free-throws. But by the standards of Aronhalt, the Blue Devils missed more than seven foul shots.
"We consider missing the front end of one-and-one's missing two free throws," Aronhalt said on AM 1240 after the game.
Zanesville had several chances for 'free points' at the free throw line in the second half. St. Edward was called for 10 team fouls in the third quarter alone. But ZHS missed the first of one-and-one foul shots three times in that period.
Junior guard Korey Haddox was the only other Blue Devil in double-figures with 10. 6-9, UC-Santa Barbara signee Chris Moore led the Eagles (8-2) with 16 pts.
ZHS plays Sunday night at 8:30 pm in the Buckeye Bracket Consolation Game. You can listen to the game on Z-102.5 FM in Zanesville. Coverage starts at 8:10 pm.
