After the morning session, New Lexington's Dustin Hawk carried the area's lone hope for a state championship.

That weight, combined with the 140 pounds of SVSM's Josh Rohler, proved too much. Rohler pinned Hawk 1:50 in the Division II State Semifinals Friday night.

New Lex coach Steve Fondale said Hawk (3-time MVL champ) would have been the first Panthers' wrestler ever to reach the state finals.

Still, Hawk assured himself of a top-6 state finish, defeating Alex Shiff (Fostoria) 6-4 in the championship quarterfinals.

New Lex's Jordan Spohn (4-time MVL Champ) still has a chance to place, beating Cody Apperson (Morgan) 2-1 OT and Brandon McEntire (Medina Highland) 12-5 in the Consolation bracket.

Spohn lost in the 145-pound class championship quarterfinals to David Davis (St. Francis DeSales) 3-1 Friday morning.

The top 6 wrestlers place in the state. Wrestlers in the consolation bracket can finish as high as third in the state.
