Thad Matta becomes the new men's basketball coach at Ohio State.
In a capricious move, Xavier basketball coach Thad Matta accepted Ohio State's offer to become the Buckeyes' next head coach, Xavier athletic director Dawn Rogers said Wednesday night.
The Buckeyes reportedly offered the job to Matta after he visited with OSU athletic director Andy Geiger and University President Karen Holbrook Wednesday morning.
Just last week, Matta told the Cincinnati Enquirer that he was not a candidate for the Ohio State coaching position.
The Buckeyes reportedly interviewed Rice coach Willis Wilson and Vanderbilt coach Kevin Stallings Tuesday in Columbus. It marked the second interview for each person.
But Matta apparently became the favorite after his interview. Matta, who turns 37 on Sunday, coached Xavier to the Elite Eight last season, his third year with the Musketeers.
Xavier administration officials are reportedly stunned by the decision.
An OSU spokesman says the Buckeyes will introduce Matta at a press conference Friday.
