Aaron Bates was one of the best punters in college football last year, and even if he didn't hear his name called at the NFL draft, that wasn't a guarantee the John Glenn graduate wouldn't get his shot at the pros. Today, he got that chance.
Bates agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers to head to Latrobe and take part in camp. The Steelers do have a punter in Daniel Sepulveda, but he has missed half of his professional career due to injury and is set to become a free agent. The team also has Jeremy Kapinos in camp who replaced the injuried Sepulveda last season.
Bates was the first-ever punter to be named captain of the Michigan State Spartans. He started all 52 games in his career in East Lansing, and was second in school history with 260 punts and seventh in punt average at 42 yards a kick.
