Hilliard's Joo-Young Lee wasn't in serious contention to win the Ohio Amateur through 54 soggy holes at Zanesville Country Club.
The final 19 holes were a different story.
The Northern Illinois junior fired a blistering 68 Saturday to rally from a four-stroke deficit and force a playoff against Dublin's Jared Howard. Lee birdied the par 3 18th to add his name to the illustrious list of golfers that have captured one of the state's most prestigious tournaments.
Fifty-four holes haven't been enough to produce an outright leader in the Ohio Amateur Championship at Zanesville Country Club. Jack Sparling, Jonathan Feldkamp, Jared Howard and Logan Lagodich have created a four-way tie for first place with one round to play.
Sparling held a one-stroke lead at the halfway mark by carding a 139 (69-70) but slipped in the third round with one-over 73. Feldkamp drew level with an even-par 72 while Howard and Lagodich each fired a one-under 71.
The Zanesville Blue Devils know the feeling of being doubted.
"(People) don't expect us to win so it makes us just want to work harder and be better at what we do," said senior quarterback Derek Grandstaff.
Coming off a 5-5 campaign in 2014, Z.H.S. is already beginning to prove the doubters wrong. The Devils won the Ohio 7-on-7 state championship and are now prepping to compete in the 7-on-7 University National Championship Series in Washington D.C.
The Ohio Amateur Championship kicked off Tuesday at Zanesville Country Club. Logan Lagodich took the lead after one round of play, carding a 68 (-4). Right behind him are John Chaney and Jack Sparling. 18 golfers were unable to finish their rounds due to rain which delayed play in the afternoon. Crooksville grad Joe Allen is leading the way among local golfers in the field, sitting at -1. Two-time reigning champ Andrew Dorn got off to a rough start on Tuesday sitting at +3 while locals Zack...
Zanesville football is heading to the 7-on-7 University National Passing Tournament in Washington D.C. next Thursday. The Blue Devils won the Ohio state championship in Dublin by going a perfect 8-0.
This is Zanesville's first trip to the national tournament. The Devils won the state title two years ago but did not make the trip to Alabama. To help fund the D.C. trip, checks can be made payable to the Zanesville Quarterback Club. Contact head coach Chad Grandstaff for more information...
