When River View won the Division II State Championship in 2006 it may have been a bit premature. Only one senior consistantly played for the Lady Bears a year ago and this year's team is reaping the benefits.

From young to loaded, River View is now a senior laden bunch with experience to show for it.

As the tournament trail begins for the Lady Bears Wednesday against Meadowbrook, River View and its four senior starters are primed to leave their mark in school history....

River View might be the defending state champions in Division II, but apparently the Lady Bears aren't the favorite to repeat.

In the final Associated Press girl's high school basketball poll released Tuesday night, Lewistown Indian Lake (19-1) takes the poll championship, edging River View (19-1) by only four points in the final vote.

That should be o.k. with the Black and Gold though. Last year River View won the state championship as the third ranked team in D-II....

Newark's best season in recent history is finally showing up in the Associated Press boy's high school basketball rankings.

At 18-1 the OCC-Ohio Division Champions are ranked seventh in the second to last poll to be released. The Wildcats wrap up their regular season Friday at home against rival Lancaster.

Meanwhile, in Division II Zanesville remained fifth after a pair of wins last week. The 16-1 Blue Devils should maintain a top five spot if they can pick up wins in...

With the girl's high school basketball regular season now complete for most schools, WHIZ's first Power Poll champion has been crowned.

At 19-1, three-time ECOL champion River View is the number one team. The Lady Bears never fell from the top spot this season, despite a loss to Africentric late in the year. MVL champion Maysville (19-1) finished a close second and unbeaten Buckeye Trail third.

The final boy's Power Poll will be posted next week, with Zanesville closing...

This Saturday the MVL Wrestling Tournament will take place at West Muskingum High School.

Favorites to win the tournament are New Lexington and Sheridan but an outside team that could surprise some people would be the Morgan Raiders.

A couple of years ago wrestler Ryan Knapp, brother of current Raider Mitch Knapp, left Morgan for Columbus St. Francis DeSales where he went on to finish as a state runner up in 2003. Leaving thoughts that possibly All-State Wrestler Mitch...

John Glenn senior Aaron Bates had his options when it came to picking a college. Offers were on the table from big time schools like West Virginia, Purdue and Ohio, but it wasn't until Zanesville native Mark Dantonio became the coach at Michigan State, that Bates found the perfect fit.

Leaning toward attending West Virginia, one visit to East Lansing convinced the punter/kicker that the Big Ten was the place to be. He said WVU only had the football aspect that he wanted and that...

With all of the area high school basketball cancellations this week, the sports staff at WHIZ has gotten frustrated with a lack of hoops.

So we took matters into our own hands.

Snow and cold temperatures may keep most games played indoors from taking place, but we wanted to take it a step further.

Here are a few of the highlights (outakes actually) of our one-on-one basketball game that took place Tuesday night at Zanesville High School's outside courts.

It's a game reserved for the top high school football players in the state.

The annual Ohio North-South Classic is scheduled for June 16, 2007 at Columbus Crew Stadium and three area standouts have been selected to take part in the star studded event reserved for the top seniors from a year ago.

John Glenn kicker punter Aaron Bates will suit up for the South squad. The two-time All-Ohio kicker is set to sign a national letter of intent to play football next season. As a...
