In only his first year playing in the Zanesville Seniors' Classic, Jim Spargrove holds off the rest of the 103 player field to claim the 2005 championship. After shooting a 2-under 70 on Tuesday, Spargrove turns in a 1-under 71 on the final day to win by three strokes.

Cleveland General Manger Danny Ferry's plan of making the Cavs a championship team is continuing to look better every week this off season. After shooting guard Larry Hughes and center Zydrunas Illgauskas agree to sign with Cleveland, power forward Donyell Marshall makes his commitment.

- At Gant Stadium, Newark records its third mercy rule victory to advance to the Regional tournament. The state champions as 14-year olds, Newark goes 4-0 for the tournament. In the win Newark pounds out 17 hits. Rob Howell and KC Weber go a combined 6-6 at the plate for the state champions. Zanesville finished the tournament in 4th place of eight teams.

At the Zanesville Country Club, 55-Year Old Jim Spargrove leads the 41st Seniors' Classic after one round. The current ZCC club champion shoots a two-under 70 in his first time playing the event. Fellow first-timer from Zanesville, Larry Snode is a stroke back, recording a 1-under 71. Defending champion John Dinan struggles on day one, carding a 79. The second and final round will get underway at 9 a.m. Wednesday with a shotgun start.

- In an elimination game, Zanesville runs out of gas early in a mercy rule defeat. The game was tied 1-1 after an inning, but the Americans surrender 14 runs in the second inning. Cody Hartman takes the pitching loss, only surviving one an a third innings. Hartman gives up seven runs and four hits. As a team, Zanesville commits 10 errors. At Gant Stadium for the 15-Year Old Babe Ruth State Tournament, the host team Zanesville Americans are mercied by rival Newark, 14-0 in five innings.

Newark scores three runs in the first inning, then pounds the Zanesville pitching staff for eight more in the second. Justin Merry takes the loss for Zanesville. Merry pitches one and one-third innings allowing eight runs and three hits. However, his defense committs four errors.

At Zanesville Country Club, Chris Wilson's one under in the final round makes him 10 under for the tournament and earns him the prestigious Ohio Amateur Championship. A junior-to-be at Northwestern University, Wilson led throughout the four round tournament, wire-to-wire. His six-under in round one was the best score all week.

Zanesville's Kyle Coconis wraps up a brilliant week as well. Coconis finishes fourth overall in the field of 144, shooting three under for the tournament....

In four games last weekend, the Zanesville 15-Year Old All-Star team struck out 30 times in four games. But Josh Mohler still managed to stay on top of his game. The Sophomore to be at John Glenn High School went 5-9 at the plate with a pair of walks and three RBI.

Baseball is his sport. And despite throwing up dirt, Mohler is more focused on furthering his athletic career.
