Zanesville native Jay Payton returned to Boston's lineup Wednesday.

Payton was hit by a pitch on his right hand last week by Baltimore's Daniel Cabrera. Two X-Rays, one at the Florida ballpark and at a local hospital, showed no broken bones.

Payton went 0-2 as the Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-4.

Boston opens the regular season Sunday night against the NY Yankees.

Former Cleveland defensive end Courtney Brown will sign with the Denver Broncos, ESPN.com reports. Financial details were not available.

Brown has only recorded 17 sacks since Cleveland drafted him number one overall in 2000. He has missed 33 games with knee, ankle, neck, biceps and foot injuries.

The Browns, who would have owed Brown $8 million this year, cut the defensive end March 14. They hoped to re-sign him to a smaller deal.

Payton was hit by Baltimore pitcher Daniel Cabrera but X-rays taken at the Florida ballpark and a local hospital showed no breaks.

Payton won't play until Tuesday at the earliest, Red Sox manager Terry Francona told the Boston Globe. Boston opens the regular season Sunday night against the NY Yankees.

The McConnelsville community came together on Saturday afternoon to help the family of Brandon Smith. Smith just finished his senior basketball year for the Raiders, but it was a year limited by multiple sclerosis. The year before, he was an all-MVL pick.

Ohio State sophomore Jessica Davenport scored a Buckeye first Wednesday.

Davenport became the first OSU player to earn first team All-America honors. Former Buckeye Katie Smith (Logan) made the second team in 1996.

Davenport, also a Naismith finalist, leads Ohio State in scoring (19 per game) and rebounding (9 per game). OSU plays Rutgers in the Sweet 16 Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia.

Ohio State sophomore Jessica Davenport was named one of the four finalists for the Naismith Award, annually given to the nation's top player.

Davenport, the Big Ten Player of the Year, leads the Buckeyes with averages of 19.3 ppg., 9.1 rpg. and 3.4 bpg.

Ohio State faces Maryland in the Round of 32 Tuesday night.

New Cavs' owner Dan Gilbert had been in the NBA officially for about two weeks.

Ostensibly, that's long enough to realize a chance was needed.

The Cavs fired head coach Paul Silas Monday. Cleveland (34-30, 5th place Eastern Conference) lost at Toronto 105-98 Sunday, the team's 9th consecutive road defeat and 9th in its last 12 games overall.

New Cavs owner Dan Gilbert fined head coach Paul Silas $10,000 for derogatory comments he made regarding Utah's Carlos Boozer, a former Cleveland player.

Silas made the comments Monday, the day before Cleveland beat a Boozerless Utah team 93-72. Silas says he though the comments were made off the record, but they were broadcast on national radio Wednesday.

Silas apologized publicly for the comment and called Boozer to apologize. Boozer missed the game in Cleveland...

Following one of West Muskingum's most successful football seasons ever, the Tornadoes hired a most impressive coach.

West M will introduce Len Hartman to the team, parents and the media Saturday, WM athletics director Troy Tucker told WHIZ.

Hartman comes to West M from Rittman High School where he was the offensive coordinator for two seasons. Hartman also served as the OC at Akron Coventry high school for three years, Tucker said.

Ohio announced men's basketball coach Tim O'Shea received a two year contract extension keeping him in Athens through the 2009-2010 season.

Ohio makes its first NCAA Tournament appearance in 11 years Friday. The Bobcats play the SEC tournament champion Florida Gators in Nashville, TN.
