OSU Coach Jim O'Brien named Terence Dials the Buckeyes' team captain Monday. O'Brien and the Buckeyes normally vote for and select a captain right before the season started. But O'Brien said he wants sound leadership for Ohio State's offseason workouts. Dials, a 6-9 junior, averaged about 10.5 ppg and 6.5 rpg this season.

It's not often Buckeye Country welcomes a Penn State Nittany Lion to town. But the Amrou Grotto brought in former PSU Quarterback Todd Blackledge to speak to over 350 invitees. Blackledge, winner of the 1982 National Championship at Penn State, mainly spoke about sports relating well to activities in life. He also talked about differences between college and pro football, calling the NFL boring at one point.

Indians manager Eric Wedge announced some plans for the upcoming season... Jeff D'Amico will be the #4 starter in the rotation, even after losing a NL-leading 16 games last season. Jake Westbrook will come out of the bullpen, while Jason Bere will get sent to AAA Buffalo. That means Jason Stanford and Chad Durbin are left to battle for the 5th spot in the starting rotation. Another roster battle... backup catcher... Josh Bard strains his groin against the Reds.

Navy hires Bill Lange as its new men's basketball coach. Lange had been an assistant at Villanova the past three seasons. ZHS Head Coach Scott Aronhalt has told WHIZ in the past that he preferred to have Michigan St. asst. Doug Wojick (Navy alum) get the job, but according to Navy's insiders.com website, Wojick expressed disinterest in the job a few days ago. Wojick's younger brother, Dave, is a Navy assistant... and he was instrumental in bringing ZHS senior Drake Aronhalt to sign with Navy...

Cincinnati trades RHP Chris Reitsma to Atlanta for LHP Jung Bong and RHP Bubba Nelson. Reitsma was named the Reds' Organizational Pitcher of the Year just last season, when he won 9 games and saved another 12. However, with Danny Graves moving back to closer, and with the pickup of Todd Jones only a day earlier, Reitsma was viewed as a tradeable asset to get developing young pitchers.

Zanesville native Kevin Martin has decided to go pro. The Western Carolina junior submitted the papers needed to go into the NBA Draft. He can still change his mind and go back to school. He hasn't signed with an agent yet. Martin finished second in the nation in scoring this past season at just under 25 points a game.

Snow, snow, go away, come again another day. The white stuff forces the postponement of Tuesday night's DIV regional semifinal battle between Rosecrans and Kidron Central Christian. The game will now be played Wednesday night at Canton Fieldhouse at 8pm.

Columbus had two players that made "The Hockey News" list of players most likely to be traded by the deadline. One of them, Geoff Sanderson, does have to pack his bags. The Blue Jackets send the forward to Vancover for a 3rd-round pick. In an earlier trade, Lasse Pirjeta was sent to Pittsburgh for Brian Holzinger, a former Bowling Green star who won the Hobey Baker Award in 1995 as the nation's top college hockey player.
