CINCINNATI (AP) — The Texas Rangers have placed outfielder Josh Hamilton on unconditional release waivers as he tries to come back from a series of operations on his left knee.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — Belgian Kirsten Flipkens added to an already memorable summer Tuesday, beating Belinda Bencic of Switzerland 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in the opening round of the Connecticut Open.

Flipkens, who upset Venus Williams at the Olympics, had lost in the second round of qualifying in New Haven. But, she was moved into the main draw after Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko withdrew from the tournament earlier in the day with a right knee injury.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina's athletic department reported 23 violations of NCAA or Southeastern Conference rules in the past year, nine involving the football team.

BATCHELDER'S GRANT, Maine (AP) — Authorities say a well-known triathlete from New Hampshire was bicycling with a friend inside a national forest in Maine when he went off a steep mountain road and died.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah has partially reinstated suspended receiver Cory Butler-Byrd a day after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief for damaging a police car and building last month.
