NYON, Switzerland (AP) — UEFA says it awarded Legia Warsaw a 3-0 win after a Europa League qualifying match in Albania was abandoned due to crowd trouble.

Legia player Ondrej Duda was struck by an object thrown from the crowd when the Polish side led Kukesi 2-1 early in the second half last Thursday.

The third qualifying round, first-leg match was abandoned in the 52nd minute.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Organizers of the Athens Marathon say the elite competition has been dropped from this year's race due to financial difficulties.

In a statement Tuesday, the Greek Athletics Federation said the decision had been taken for the Nov. 8 race "in light of the economic challenges facing the country and its people."

The amateur race will still take place and is expected to attract a record 16,000 runners, organizers said....

THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — The opening match of the new Dutch Eredivisie league season has been postponed along with at least one other first-round fixture because of a planned strike by police.

SC Heerenveen announced Tuesday that its match against newly promoted De Graafschap Doetinchem, scheduled for Friday evening, has been banned by Heerenveen Mayor Tjeerd van der Zwan because of the strike.

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Cincinnati has been picked as the favorite to win the American Athletic Conference's inaugural football championship game.

The Bearcats return 15 seniors from a team that won a share of the conference title last year. They received 22 of 30 votes in the annual preseason media poll released Tuesday during the conference's annual media day in Newport, Rhode Island. Memphis came in second in the balloting with five votes.

KAZAN, Russia (AP) — The United States won gold and silver in women's high diving at the world championships Tuesday as Rachelle Simpson beat defending champion Cesilie Carlton to the top spot.

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — The cannon at Northern Illinois University football games has been silenced.

The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle ( ) reports that this coming season the familiar boom of a howitzer every time the Huskies score a touchdown will be replaced by fireworks.

The school says the main reason is that the addition of the Endzone Club in the south end zone left little room for the cannon from the Illinois National Guard Armory...
