BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Red Sox have designated outfielder Daniel Nava for assignment in a move to add pitching depth.

The Red Sox recalled right-handed reliever Jonathan Aro from Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday to take Nava's place. Boston also optioned left-handed reliever Tommy Layne to Triple-A to make room for right-hander Jean Machi, who was claimed off waivers from San Francisco this week.

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Bills have place three players on the active/non-football injury list, including Pro Bowl defensive end Mario Williams.

Cornerback Leodis McKelvin and kicker Dan Carpenter were also placed on the list, which is designated for injuries sustained outside of team activities.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Reds recalled left-hander David Holmberg from the minor leagues to start against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, taking Johnny Cueto's spot. Cincinnati traded its 20-game winner to Kansas City on Sunday.

Holmberg went 2-2 with a 4.80 in five starts and two relief appearances for the Reds last year. He spent this season at Triple-A Louisville, going 7-6 with a 4.40 ERA in 17 starts.

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. (AP) — Chicago Bears cornerback Tim Jennings pleaded guilty to reckless driving stemming from an arrest in Georgia in January.

Karla White, office manager of the Gwinnett County Recorder's Court clerk in Georgia, said Thursday that Jennings was sentenced to 40 hours of community service and must complete a substance abuse program. He paid a $1,147 fine.
