MONTREAL (AP) — The Montreal Canadiens have traded veteran forward Daniel Briere to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for forward Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau and a fifth-round pick in 2015 draft on Monday.

The 36-year-old Briere, who is heading into the final year of his contract, had 13 goals and 12 assists in 69 games with the Canadiens last season.

SAN ANGELO, Texas (AP) — Ed Messbarger, who won 630 games in a 41-year college coaching career spent mostly at St. Mary's and Angelo State in Texas, has died. He was 81.

NEW YORK (AP) — Former major league pitcher Joel Pineiro has been suspended 50 games after testing positive for a banned stimulant.

The commissioner's office announced the penalty on Monday under the minor league drug program.
