WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Members of a semi-pro Kansas baseball team say the 9-year-old batboy who died after being accidentally hit by a follow-through swing was energetic and hard-working, and had a nearly constant smile.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pirates right-hander A.J. Burnett is hopeful of pitching again this season after an MRI on his pitching elbow revealed a strained flexor tendon rather than a torn ligament.

The 38-year-old Burnett said Monday that "I'm going to do everything I can to make it back." He reiterated that he will retire at the end of the season.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) — Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera returned to work Monday with a message for his players.

Rivera missed the previous two days of training camp practice to attend the funeral in Reno, Nevada for his brother Mickey, who died last week following a two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
