CHICAGO (AP) — Infielder Jonathan Herrera and outfielder Matt Szczur have made the opening-day roster for the Chicago Cubs.

Herrera agreed to a minor league contract with Chicago in December, and then hit .300 in 22 spring games. Szczur, who made his major league debut with Chicago in August, hit .354 with five homers and nine RBIs in spring training.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres have pulled off another blockbuster trade, acquiring closer Craig Kimbrel and outfielder Melvin Upton from the Atlanta Braves for outfielders Carlos Quentin and Cameron Maybin, plus two minor leaguers and a draft pick.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Lon Simmons, a Hall of Fame broadcaster whose career spanned five decades calling San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics and 49ers games, has died. He was 91.

The Giants announced that Simmons had died "peacefully" Sunday.

Simmons' broadcasts of Giants games began in the team's first season out West in 1958. He was honored with the Ford C. Frick Award by the Hall of Fame in 2004.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Duke's defensive tweaks worked well enough to help the Blue Devils get back to another national championship game.

Their next test is to slow a Wisconsin team that can score at an efficient clip.

Duke (34-4) has held its five NCAA Tournament opponents to 55 points per game on 37-percent shooting. The 55-point average is the lowest for the program in the tournament going back to at least 2000, according to STATS....
