WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals recalled right-hander Tanner Roark from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday in advance of his start against the Braves.

President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Mario Goetze scored twice to help Germany beat Poland 3-1 Friday in their European Championship qualifier and replace the visitors at the top of Group D.

Goetze scored twice as the Germans avenged their first ever defeat to Poland last October.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — Royal Posse won the $100,000 Evan Shipman at Saratoga Race Course on Friday, dueling with Saratoga Snacks through the stretch before getting his nose down at the wire.

This was the 23rd lifetime start but first in a stakes for Royal Posse. The 4-year-old was making his third start, all at Saratoga, since being claimed by trainer Rudy Rodriguez in May.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay Lightning backup goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy could be sidelined up to three months after undergoing surgery to remove a blood clot from near his left collarbone.

Team vice president and general manager Steve Yzerman said Friday that the 21-year-old Russian was treated for a type of Vascular Thoracic Outlet Syndrome and is expected to make a full recovery and return to the ice in two to three months.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel has been throwing tennis and weighted balls as he recovers from a sore right elbow.

Coach Mike Pettine said Manziel is "on schedule" in his rehab program and that he could begin throwing a football again as early as Friday. Manziel has been dealing with tendinitis in his forearm and elbow, a condition that has bothered him since his freshman year at Texas A&M.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers have released defensive lineman Darnell Dockett and five other players.

The 49ers also released linebacker Philip Wheeler, safety Craig Dahl, offensive linemen Joe Looney and Patrick Miller, and receiver Issac Blakeney on Friday to leave 69 players on the roster. San Francisco needs to cut down to 53 by Saturday.

ATLANTA (AP) — Elijah Holyfield, the top-rated running back in the state of Georgia and the son of former boxing champion Evander Holyfield, says he will sign with Georgia.
