DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) — The final practice before the Daytona 500 qualifying races was free of chaos.

Of course, only five cars turned laps during the 1-hour, 25-minute practice session Thursday.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Johnny Cueto would like to have a new contract before opening day.

The 20-game winner knows that the Cincinnati Reds might not be able to afford to pay him the going rate for a No. 1 starter, leaving his status this season in doubt. FALUN, Sweden (AP) — Sarah Hendrickson was given a useful reminder when she was handed her bib for a ski jump qualifying round on Thursday.

Written on the front of it was: "Nordic World Ski Champion."

She earned that title in 2013 in Val di Fiemme, Italy, but as she prepares to defend it on Friday the 20-year-old American is only just now rediscovering her confidence following a serious knee injury that ruined last season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kevin Garnett is coming back to the place it all began.

The Minnesota Timberwolves announced Thursday night that they sent forward Thaddeus Young to the Brooklyn Nets for Garnett.

Garnett spent his first 12 seasons in Minnesota. He guided the Timberwolves to the only eight playoff appearances in franchise history and won the MVP while leading them to the Western Conference finals in 2004.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The state medical examiner says former Portland Trail Blazers player Jerome Kersey died from a blood clot that traveled from his left calf to his left lung.

The announcement Thursday comes a day after Kersey died at 52. He had minor knee surgery Friday, but it could not be immediately determined if surgery caused the clot.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Reliever David Aardsma has agreed to a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers and will report to big league spring training.

The 33-year-old right-hander was 4-0 with 11 saves and a 1.29 ERA in 33 appearances for Triple-A Memphis last season and is 15-17 with 69 saves and a 4.23 ERA in 298 career major league games.

The Dodgers opened spring training Thursday in Glendale, Arizona.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Pitcher Mike Minor and the Atlanta Braves have argued their positions in salary arbitration, with the sides $500,000 apart.
