ELHART LAKE, Wis. (AP) — Qualifying for the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Road America has been cancelled due to wet track conditions.

Rain fell overnight and into the morning.

Ben Rhodes was awarded the pole because he had the fastest speed from the first of two practice sessions held at the rural Wisconsin road course on Friday. He got to 108.500 mph.

NEW YORK (AP) — A lawyer for a racecar driver who was killed when he was run over by Tony Stewart's car says legal claims by the NASCAR star in response to a lawsuit are "appalling."

Attorney Mark Lanier said in an email Saturday that Kevin Ward Jr. was killed last year as he walked on a dirt track in upstate New York even though Stewart is one of the world's best drivers.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars defensive end Andre Branch will miss "significant time" early in the season after spraining a ligament in his left knee.

The Jaguars made the announcement Saturday, one day after Branch injured his knee in a preseason game against Detroit. Branch sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee early in the game, when teammate Aaron Colvin landed on him.

OXFORD, Ohio (AP) — Baseball's banned "hit king" will take a swing at campus lecturing this fall at Miami University in southwest Ohio.

The school says Cincinnati Enquirer sports columnist Paul Daugherty (DAHK'-er-tee) will lead a discussion with Pete Rose the evening of Sept. 21 in Miami's Hall Auditorium.

Rose, a Cincinnati native who holds the career hits record with 4,256, was banned from Major League Baseball in 1989 for betting on baseball....

VYSOKY UJEZD, Czech Republic (AP) — Thomas Pieters of Belgium shot a 7-under 65 on Saturday to take a one-stroke lead after the third round of the Czech Masters.

Pieters began the round one shot behind overnight leaders Matthew Fitzpatrick and Pelle Edberg but made an eagle on the par-5 first hole and continued with four birdies on the next nine.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California's major league sports clubs and a leading raffle vendor are lobbying state lawmakers for the exclusive right to conduct charitable gambling at sporting events.

MURCIA, Spain (AP) — Jesper Stuyven of Belgium won an accident-ravaged eighth stage of the Spanish Vuelta after a crash sent Kris Boeckmans to the hospital and forced three others, including American Tejay Van Garderen, to withdraw from the Grand Tour on Saturday.
