STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — No. 5 Wisconsin couldn't control Penn State's D.J. Newbill on Wednesday night, so the Badgers settled for stopping all his teammates.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid vowed Wednesday that he will be ready for the start of the season despite needing a cane to get around the scouting combine following knee replacement surgery.

Reid skipped attending the Senior Bowl because of the procedure, which occurred after the Chiefs finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs. He joked that he "won't be starting on PUP" — the physically unable to perform list for players that are recovering from injuries....

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — Washington's four Western Hockey League franchises, currently under investigation for child labor practices, have asked the Legislature for exemptions to state labor laws.

SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle Mariners pitching prospect Victor Sanchez was hospitalized in Venezuela following a boating accident.

The Mariners could not comment Wednesday on Sanchez's condition, citing federal health reporting laws, but said the team was monitoring the situation. Sanchez remains in the hospital.

The accident occurred Friday in the town of Carupano, the team said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Redskins coach Mike Shanahan says things went downhill for him in Washington because Robert Griffin III and team owner Dan Snyder both wanted the quarterback to become a dropback passer.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — First baseman Eric Hosmer and the Kansas City Royals avoided arbitration by agreeing to a $13.9 million, two-year contract.

Hosmer gets $5.65 million this year under Wednesday's agreement and $8.25 million in 2016.

Washington Redskins safety Ryan Clark says he's retiring from the NFL after a 13-year career as a player.

As expected, the 35-year-old old Clark is going to work as an NFL analyst for ESPN.

He started his pro career with the New York Giants, won a Super Bowl with the Pittsburgh Steelers and had two stints with the Redskins, including last season.

MIAMI (AP) — Dwyane Wade reiterated that he plans to play Friday when the Miami Heat open their post-All-Star schedule in New York against the Knicks.

Wade practiced fully on Wednesday in the Heat's first workout since the break. He hasn't played since Jan. 27 because of a hamstring strain.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Colorado defeated catcher Wilin Rosario in salary arbitration Wednesday, and Pittsburgh's Pedro Alvarez and Arizona's Mark Trumbo went to hearings.

Rosario was given a $2.8 million salary instead of his $3.3 million request. Elizabeth Neumeier, Phillip LaPorte and James Oldham heard arguments Tuesday.
