FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons have released quarterbacks Rex Grossman and T.J. Yates, leaving Sean Renfree as the backup to starter Matt Ryan.

The 35-year-old Grossman was signed last week and was unimpressive, completing 4 of 9 passes for 41 yards, in Thursday night's preseason win over Baltimore. Grossman played for the Chicago Bears for six years and also spent time with the Texans and Redskins.

Yates was Ryan's top backup in 2014...

CHICAGO (AP) — Anthony Rizzo hit a grand slam in Chicago's eight-run fifth inning, and rookie Addison Russell homered twice in a game for the first time in his career to power the Cubs and Jon Lester to a 14-5 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday.

Javier Baez added a two-run shot — his first homer this season — and went 3 for 4 in his third game since his recall from the minors as the Cubs rolled to their third win in five following a four-game losing streak....

NEW YORK (AP) — The root question of the "Deflategate" scandal might be following New England quarterback Tom Brady for a while, regardless of a judge's ruling in his favor.

U.S. District Judge Richard Berman freed Brady from his four-game suspension Thursday, blaming NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell for mishandling Brady's appeal and ordering a stiff penalty without a proper basis.

The judge was never asked to decide whether Brady tried to deflate...

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals didn't have to give up much to take a look at quarterback Matt Barkley to see if he might fit in the team's long-term plans.

A conditional seventh-round pick was all it took to acquire the former USC star from the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday.

Just what that means for Logan Thomas was unclear. Thomas, in his second NFL season, was competing with rookie Phillip Sims for the No. 3 quarterback job in Arizona....

NEW YORK (AP) — CC Sabathia has pitched a simulated game without any pain for the New York Yankees and could rejoin their rotation next Wednesday.

Sabathia tested his injured right knee while throwing about 60 pitches before Friday night's game at Yankee Stadium against Tampa Bay. He threw four innings in game conditions while wearing a brace and said it went fine.

The 35-year-old lefty has been on the 15-day disabled list since Aug. 24. He is 4-9...

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jordan Berry locked down the punting job with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, beating out incumbent Brad Wing by default after Pittsburgh sent Wing to the New York Giants on Friday for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

A seemingly tight competition apparently turned into a bit of a blowout in the final days of training camp. Berry punted five times in Thursday night's preseason finale against Carolina while Wing had just one chance to convince...

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Though saying he's optimistic, running back LeSean McCoy isn't prepared to announce whether his injured left hamstring will be healed in time for the Buffalo Bills' season opener against Indianapolis on Sept. 13.

McCoy said it was "just a matter of time," while acknowledging he is still experiencing some pain when making certain cuts. As for how confident he is he'll be playing, McCoy said: "We'll wait and see."

He spoke...

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Eagles have traded quarterback Matt Barkley to the Arizona Cardinals, clearing a roster spot for Tim Tebow.

Arizona sent a conditional seventh-round draft pick to Philadelphia for Barkley. He'll provide depth behind Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton. Logan Thomas and rookie Phillip Sims were competing for the No. 3 job.

Tebow outplayed Barkley in the preseason and appears to have locked up the No. 3 job behind Sam...

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — It looks like two undrafted rookies from Auburn will make Jacksonville's opening-day roster.

The Jaguars waived 18 players Friday and two Auburn players were not among the cuts. Quarterback Nick Marshall, who switched to cornerback in January, and former Tigers running Corey Grant, are still on the team.

That doesn't guarantee them roster spots, especially since Jacksonville still has 57 players on its roster. Teams have to...

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Denmark failed to take its chance to move away from Albania in their European Championship group with a 0-0 draw Friday, while Serbia beat Armenia 2-0.

Sokol Cikalleshi's header in the 23rd minute almost put the visitors ahead but Denmark dominated the second half with attempts by Nicolai Jorgensen, Nicklas Bendtner and Daniel Agger.

Portugal leads Group I with 12 points, ahead of Denmark and Albania on 11....
