MIAMI (AP) — Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been designated for assignment by the Miami Marlins, an acknowledgement their multiyear deal with him was a bust.

Saltalamacchia signed a $21 million, three-year contract as a free agent before the 2014 season. He played poorly last year and lost his starting job early this season to rookie J.T. Realmuto.

The Marlins will try to trade Saltalamacchia but likely will wind up releasing the south Florida...

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Rory McIlroy arrived at Harding Park on Monday knowing he'll be at the Match Play Championship at least until Friday.

So will the rest of the 64-man field.

In a format change to avoid the single elimination that often sent big names home early, the Match Play will be round robin featuring 16 groups of four players. The best record from each group advances to the round of 16 on Saturday morning for a full weekend of golf....

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The New York State Gaming Commission has fined harness trainer Luis Pena and banned him three years for illegally drugging horses.

State racing regulators fined Pena $343,400 fine on Monday and held him responsible for 1,717 equine drug violations.

Pena, a New Jersey-based harness horse trainer, was indefinitely suspended in 2012 after racing regulators said he illegally drugged horses in nearly 700 races.

TUKWILA, Wash. (AP) — The city of Tukwila has received a letter seeking zoning information for a potential multi-purpose arena from a company run by potential NHL owner Ray Bartoszek.

The city released a statement about the conversations with RLB Holdings Sports & Entertainment LLC on Monday after the release of an story about the discussions. The city says it was approached in January 2014 by developers looking at sites for a potential arena....

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — New York Yankees right-hander Ivan Nova has thrown a simulated game and says he could pitch in an extended spring training game on Saturday.

Nova is coming back from elbow ligament replacement surgery a year ago.

The right-hander threw 12 of 15 pitches for strikes during a scoreless inning against minor leaguers Monday and appears on target to be back in June.

MADISONVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Mike Phillips, who formed the "Twin Towers" with Rick Robey on the Kentucky team that won the 1978 NCAA title, has died in western Kentucky. He was 59.

Barnett-Strother Funeral Home on Monday confirmed Philips' death. The Hopkins County coroner's office is investigating the cause of death but told WFIE-TV that Phillips died after a fall Saturday at his home in Madisonville. The funeral home lists the date of death as Saturday.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Josh Hamilton is back with the Texas Rangers.

After two troublesome years with the Los Angeles Angels and less than halfway through a $125 million, five-year contract, Hamilton was traded to AL West rival Texas with cash on Monday for a player to be named or cash.

CHICAGO (AP) — Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said goalie Corey Crawford will start Game 1 of the team's second-round series against the Minnesota Wild.

Crawford was shaky early in the Blackhawks' six-game win over Nashville in the opening round and lost the starting job to backup Scott Darling.
