ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Northwestern and Michigan have made steady climbs up The Associated Press poll due to their defenses.

The 13th-ranked Wildcats have shut out two teams and are giving up a nation-low seven points a game. That has helped Northwestern equal its total number of victories in each of the previous two years. If the Wildcats win Saturday at the Big House, they will be 6-0 for the first time since 1962 when Ara Parseghian was their coach....

DALLAS (AP) — Everything about Texas football seems broken right now.

The Longhorns are 1-4, off to their worst start since 1956 and coming off a humiliating 50-7 loss to TCU. The players were sniping at each other on social media earlier in this week. Now, Longhorns mascot Bevo the steer is critically ill.

It would be tough for it to get much worse for coach Charlie Strong's program, though losing the biggest rivalry game on the schedule would...

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa is ranked for the first time in five years.

With a win in Iowa City on Saturday, Illinois could make the Hawkeyes stay in the Top 25 a short one — and serve notice that it's an early contender in the Big Ten West.

The 22nd-ranked Hawkeyes (5-0, 1-0 Big Ten) host the Illini in a matchup that's much more intriguing than it looked like it would be in August.

Iowa has been revitalized by the sweeping...

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Tech looks to rebound from back-to-back losses to top-five teams when the Red Raiders take on Iowa State on Saturday.

The Cyclones are aiming for a second Big 12 road win after beating Kansas last week.

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kinsgbury sees a much improved Iowa State (2-2, 1-0) team led by quarterback Sam Richardson. The Red Raiders are No. 124th in the nation — fourth from the bottom — in total defense, giving up 581...

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — For Purdue seniors Frankie Williams and Danny Anthrop, it's time to dump the moral victories in exchange for a real one.

That opportunity will come Saturday, when the Boilermakers (1-4, 0-1 Big Ten) play Minnesota (3-2, 0-1) in Ross-Ade Stadium, where third-year Purdue coach Darrell Hazell is 0-8 in Big Ten games.

While the Boilermakers have beaten only Indiana State, they were in a position to win during the final two...

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska knows what's coming and believes it's ready.

The Cornhuskers knew last year, too, but definitely weren't prepared for Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon to run for an FBS-record 408 yards and four touchdowns in a demoralizing 35-point loss in Madison.

There's a new coaching staff at Nebraska, and defensive coordinator Mark Banker's unit has been among the best in the nation at stopping the run so far.

Mickelson used a different type of golf ball on the seventh hole of his fourballs match with Zach Johnson. Players cannot switch models during the round. The penalty is known as a one-hole adjustment to the match.

However, the referee was wrongly told that Mickelson was...
