NEW YORK (AP) — Even as they aim to win the NL East, the New York Mets are minding their future.

Resolved to protect their prized young pitchers, the first-place Mets confirmed Wednesday that starter Noah Syndergaard will be skipped this weekend in Miami when fellow rookie Steven Matz returns from injury. DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies recalled right-handers Brooks Brown and Justin Miller from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Both pitchers were available for Wednesday night's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Brown is making his third appearance on Colorado's roster. He last pitched for the Rockies on June 16 before going on the 15-day disabled list two days later with right shoulder inflammation.

DENVER (AP) — Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has left the team to be with his wife for the birth of the couple's first child.

Goldschmidt left Denver for Phoenix on a flight late Tuesday night. Manager Chip Hale said Goldschmidt would miss Wednesday's game against the Rockies and most likely Friday's game at the Chicago Cubs.

Hale expects Goldschmidt to rejoin the team in Chicago this weekend.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Getting traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the middle of a pennant race hasn't changed third baseman Aramis Ramirez's mind about retirement.

BOSTON (AP) — A fan at Fenway Park has been taken away on a stretcher after flipping over backward trying to catch a foul ball.

The accident occurred Wednesday during the seventh inning of a game between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox.

The fan was in the last row of the lower box seats, and landed on the concrete walkway that separates the lower and upper boxes. A witness said there was a bloody shirt on the concrete.
