OCEANPORT, N.J. (AP) — Triple Crown winner American Pharoah has been made the overwhelming 1-5 favorite in a field of eight 3-year-olds for Sunday's $1.75 million Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Nicki Gross has been named an assistant coach with the Iowa Energy, making her the only female to fill that role in the NBA D-League.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have traded outfielder Brandon Moss to the St. Louis Cardinals. In return, Cleveland will receive minor league pitcher Rob Kaminsky.

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Southern California has been picked to win its first Pac-12 football title since 2008 in a preseason media poll.

The conference announced the poll results Thursday before the start of its media days.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — With a multi-billion dollar new broadcast rights deal set to kick in for the 2016-17 season, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says "it's a very good time" for the league right now — and, he stressed, the players too.

Silver said the new agreement with ESPN and TNT will have a "significant impact on the viability" of teams. That will likely see players seek much more in their next collective bargaining opportunity, possibly in 2017.
