WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin sat out the Washington Capitals' game Tuesday night against San Jose because of personal reasons.

The Capitals sent out a note on Twitter about 35 minutes before the game saying Ovechkin would not play.

They had confirmed earlier in the day that the left wing did not take part in the team's morning skate, and coach Barry Trotz said he would be a game-time decision.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota could have safety Damarius Travis back in the lineup Saturday.

Coach Jerry Kill said Travis was expected to practice Tuesday. The senior missed the last five games after hurting his hamstring.

The Gophers, who host Nebraska, have been hit hard by injuries this season, particularly in the secondary. Cornerback Briean Boddy-Calhoun will probably miss his third straight game because of a knee problem.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The Buffalo Sabres placed defenseman Matt Donovan on waivers Tuesday and returned rookie defenseman Brendan Guhle to his Canadian junior team.

Donovan will be assigned to the Sabres' American Hockey League affiliate in Rochester if he clears waivers Wednesday. The three-year NHL veteran was a healthy scratch for Buffalo's first three games. He signed with the Sabres in free agency in July.

CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. women's team will play China in an exhibition at the Superdome in New Orleans on Dec. 16, the final game of the Americans' post-Word Cup victory tour.

The U.S. Soccer Federation said Tuesday the women's team will play three other matches in December that will be announced later.

The Americans have 33 wins, eight losses and 13 ties against China.

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) — Tim Howard is back in goal for the United States for the first time since last year's World Cup.

Howard is in the starting lineup Tuesday night for an exhibition against Costa Rica, the last game for the Americans before the start of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wizards forward Alan Anderson had a second operation on his left ankle and no timeframe for his return has been determined.

The team announced the latest surgery Tuesday.

Anderson initially had surgery in May to remove bone spurs from his left ankle. But he still was in pain from a fragment, so that was removed in the second procedure.

The Wizards said Anderson will start the rehab process immediately....

LAS VEGAS (AP) — San Diego State, coming off its fifth regular-season Mountain West championship, is favored to win the league crown again, according to a media poll released Tuesday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs placed Jamaal Charles on injured reserve Tuesday after the star running back tore the ACL in his right knee while making a cut against the Chicago Bears.

Charles had an MRI on Monday that confirmed the extent of the injury.

The Chiefs filled his roster spot by promoting running back Spencer Ware from the practice squad. Ware is a former sixth-round pick out of LSU who spent the offseason with Kansas City....

SEATTLE (AP) — Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano has undergone surgery to repair core muscle injuries and is expected to be OK for spring training.

Seattle general manager Jerry Dipoto made the announcement Tuesday after Cano's surgery was complete.

The surgery was done in Philadelphia to fix injuries on Cano's left and right sides. The recovery time is expected to be six weeks.
