LOS ANGELES (AP) — HBO has promoted Peter Nelson to run its sports department.

Ken Hershman announced in October that he was stepping down as president of HBO Sports. The network said Tuesday that Nelson's title will be executive vice president of HBO Sports.

Nelson joined HBO Sports in 2011 and has been vice president of programming since 2013.

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A former high-ranking South African sports official was shot and killed early Tuesday by armed robbers at his Johannesburg home, the national Olympic committee said.

Banele Sindani, who was a former chief executive of the South African Olympic committee, was 60. He also worked with Athletics South Africa and the Soweto Marathon.

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Indians have signed free agent reliever Joba Chamberlain to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Chamberlain spent last season with Detroit, Toronto and Kansas City. The 30-year-old has a 25-21 career record with a 3.87 ERA. He has seven saves in 365 appearances over nine seasons.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Panthers say they have signed veteran cornerback Cortland Finnegan and released long snapper Danny Aiken.

The 31-year-old Finnegan spent his first six seasons with the Tennessee Titans and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2008. He spent two seasons playing for the St. Louis Rams before joining the Miami Dolphins in 2014.

Central Florida has hired Oregon offensive coordinator Scott Frost as its new coach to take over a program that just finished a winless season.

New UCF athletic director Danny White called Frost a winner and an innovator in announcing his hiring in a statement Tuesday.

The 40-year-old Frost played quarterback for Nebraska from 1995-97 and has been an assistant with Oregon since 2009. He became offensive coordinator in 2013.
