HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association kicked off its 78th state wrestling championships with a new format and one surprising result.

Josh Giorgio of Schuylkill Valley, last year's PIAA Class AA runner-up at 120 pounds, was beaten by Reynolds' Michael Bartolo 3-1 in the first round at 132 pounds.

Giorgio entered the tournament with a 47-5 record. Bartolo came in with a 36-5 mark. Both are seniors....

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Jasmine Joyner had a career-high 22 points as top-seeded and No. 17-ranked Chattanooga women beat eighth-seeded UNC-Greensboro 78-44 in the opening game of the Southern Conference tournament on Thursday.

Chelsey Shumpert added 13 points and Destiny Bramblett 10 for the Mocs (27-3), who won their 23rd straight. Joyner shot 9 of 10, blocked four shots and grabbed 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.

CINCINNATI (AP) — One year after the NCAA changed how rules were enforced to open up the men's basketball game, it looks a whole lot like it once did.

Fouls, free throws and scoring increased at the start of last season with a new emphasis on eliminating some of the physical play, especially around the basket. Those statistics leveled off as the season went along, and they're now back to near where they were two years ago.

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Dearica Hamby had 23 points and 10 rebounds on Thursday and 13th-seeded Wake Forest women knocked off No. 5 seed and 22nd-ranked Syracuse 85-79 in the second round of the ACC tournament.

Wake Forest (13-19) entered the tournament with just two conference wins and will play No. 4 seed and 16th-ranked Duke in the quarterfinals on Friday.

MONT-TREMBLANT, Quebec (AP) — Canadian skier Erik Guay will remain sidelined for the World Cup season because of knee surgeries and will focus on making a full recovery for next season.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Orlando City Soccer officials say the club has reached sellout status for its inaugural Major League Soccer match.

Club officials said Thursday that an additional allotment of 2,000 standing room-only tickets have now been sold, pushing the sellout for Sunday's match against fellow expansion team New York FC to 62,000 at Orlando Citrus Bowl Stadium.

NEW YORK (AP) — Maple Leafs forward Richard Panik has been fined $2,000 by the NHL for falling down and trying to draw a penalty.

Panik made contact with Capitals defenseman Mike Green in the second period of Toronto's 4-0 loss at Washington on Sunday. Panik spun and flopped to the ice after he and Green came together on the city and Green received a minor penalty for holding.

MIAMI (AP) — Tackle Jason Fox has signed a two-year contract to remain with the Miami Dolphins rather than become a free agent next week.

Fox is going into his fifth NFL season and his second with the Dolphins, and he has five career starts. He played in nine games last year and started the final two games.

Fox was a fourth-round draft pick by the Lions in 2010.

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — A person with direct knowledge of the situation says left-handed reliever Phil Coke has agreed to a minor league deal with the Chicago Cubs.

The person spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the deal. Coke is expected to join the team's major league camp on Friday.

KONTIOLAHTI, Finland (AP) — Andrej Moravec of the Czech Republic led his team to the first title at the biathlon world championships, the mixed relay on Thursday.

On the fourth and last leg, Moravec shot perfectly to give himself a gap to Martin Fourcade of France, and Tarjei Boe of Norway, and he used it win comfortably.

Fourcade and France were second, 20.2 seconds behind, and Norway third, 27.7 back.
