MOSCOW (AP) — Russian authorities are keen to use prison labor to drive down the costs of holding the 2018 World Cup.

The Russian prison service is backing a bid by Alexander Khinshtein, a lawmaker from the ruling United Russia party, to allow prisoners to be taken to work at factories, with a focus on driving down the costs of building materials for World Cup projects.

Khinshtein tells the Associated Press that the convicts would provide cheap labor...

PARIS (AP) — Fourth-seeded Tomas Berdych eased into the second round of the French Open on Monday with a 6-0, 7-5, 6-3 win over Japanese qualifier Yoshihito Nishioka.

Taking on a player looking for a first ever win on clay at a big tournament, Berdych used his powerful groundstrokes to overwhelm Nishioka from the start.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) — The head of the Palestine Football Association says he is pressing forth with his bid to oust Israel from FIFA despite efforts from its president to diffuse the crisis.

Jibril Rajoub says Monday that he "will not withdraw the motion and will not accept any compromise and any side deals."

The BWF says in a statement Monday that its president, Poul-Erik Hoyer, had written to SportAccord president Marius Vizer to convey the decision which was based on the federation's disagreement with Vizer's comments about the International Olympic Committee and President Thomas Bach in Sochi, Russia last month....

GENEVA (AP) — FIFA Vice President Michel Platini says soccer's world governing body will lack credibility for as long as Sepp Blatter is president.

Blatter is clinging to power "at all costs" and fears an "emptiness" in life without FIFA, Platini says in an interview with French sports daily L'Equipe.

While Platini says he likes Blatter "as a person" and respects him, the comments ahead of FIFA's presidential election Friday point to a deep rift...

CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James shook off an atrocious shooting start and withstood Atlanta's gritty comeback to record a triple-double, and the Cleveland Cavaliers moved within one win of the NBA Finals by beating the Hawks 114-111 in overtime on Sunday night to take a 3-0 series lead.
