Swiss agree to extradite ex-FIFA VP Webb's assistant to US

BERN, Switzerland (AP) — Switzerland's justice ministry has granted an American request to extradite a former assistant to CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb in the FIFA bribery case.

Costas Takkas, the former general secretary of the Cayman Islands Football Association, was among seven officials arrested on May 27 in a dawn raid at a luxury hotel in Zurich, two days before the FIFA presidential election.

Takkas is accused of accepting bribes in exchange for awarding marketing contracts.

Juergen Klopp wants to turn Liverpool 'into believers'

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Juergen Klopp says he wants to turn Liverpool "from doubters into believers."

Klopp signed a three-year deal on Thursday to replace Brendan Rodgers as manager and says "it is the biggest honor I can imagine."

The 48-year-old German will be try to return the club to the Champions League as well as challenge for league titles, which Liverpool last won in 1990.

Klopp says "history is the base for us" and that "it is time to start a new way ... I believe in the potential of the team."

Massa clocks fastest time in rain-hit 2nd practice in Russia

SOCHI, Russia (AP) — Williams driver Felipe Massa clocked the fastest time in Friday's second practice session for the Russian Grand Prix, with only six other drivers setting times in heavy rain.

The first practice session was disrupted by a fuel spill and subsequent attempts to clean it up by spraying water, while the second took place with standing water on large parts of the track.

Nadal outlasts Sock to reach China Open semifinals

BEIJING (AP) — Rafael Nadal reached his first hard-court semifinal of the year by outlasting Jack Sock of the United States 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the China Open on Friday.

The third-seeded Spaniard had lost before the semifinals in seven previous hard-court tournaments in what has been a disappointing season. His last title on hard courts came in Doha, Qatar, in January 2014.

Lorenzo fastest in practice for MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix

MOTEGI, Japan (AP) — Yamaha rider Jorge Lorenzo set the fastest time in Friday's practice for the MotoGP Japanese Grand Prix.

Lorenzo had a lap time of 1 minute, 44.731 seconds, at the Twin Ring Motegi circuit, 0.128 seconds faster than Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa. Ducati rider Andrea Iannone was third.

Lorenzo, who has won the last two races at Motegi, is hoping to close the 14-point gap with Yamaha teammate Valentino Rossi in the MotoGP standings. The Spanish rider showed no ill effects from a recent shoulder injury.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — South Korea's Ha Na Jang used a late three-hole birdie run to take a one-stroke lead Friday in the LPGA Malaysia.

The 23-year-old Jang shot a bogey-free 6-under 65 to reach 10-under 132 at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. She made a downhill 10-footer on the par-4 14th, holed a right-to-left curler from 15 feet on the par-3 15th and ran in a 12-footer on the par-5 16th.

Bae leads an International team rally amid Mickelson mistake

INCHEON, South Korea (AP) — Bae Sang-moon had a dynamic debut at home in the Presidents Cup by winning his match with a 12-foot birdie putt as the International team got back into the game on Friday.

Bae is playing for the final time before he starts his mandatory military service in South Korea. His putt gave him and Korean-born Danny Lee a 1-up victory over Rickie Fowler and Jimmy Walker.

The International team won three matches and halved another, cutting the American lead to 5.5-4.5 going into eight matches Saturday.

Wawrinka dominates Krajicek to reach Japan Open semifinals

TOKYO (AP) — French Open champion Stan Wawrinka overpowered Austin Krajicek 6-3, 6-4 on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Japan Open.

The top-seeded Wawrinka saved every break point he faced to dispatch the American qualifier in just 59 minutes.

The Swiss player, who has won three titles this year, will face Luxembourg's Gilles Muller in Saturday's semifinals. Muller beat Gilles Simon of France 6-3, 6-4.

Wawrinka has beaten Muller twice this year in Chennai and Rotterdam.
