Dodgers acquire first baseman Andy Wilkins from Dodgers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired first baseman Andy Wilkins from the Toronto Blue Jays for cash considerations.

The teams announced the move Sunday night.

Wilkins, 26, hit .264 in 21 games this season for Triple-A Buffalo, with four doubles and nine RBIs.


US men set world record in distance medley relay in Bahamas

NASSAU, Bahamas (AP) — The U.S. men's team set a world record in the distance medley relay at IAAF's World Relays meet on Sunday in the Bahamas.

Kyle Merber, Brycen Spratling, Brandon Johnson and Ben Blankenship set a time of 9 minutes, 15.50 seconds, eclipsing Kenya's run of 9:15.56 in 2006.

Kenya was second in Sunday's race, 1.7 seconds behind.

The distance medley relay is composed of legs of 1,200, 400, 800 and 1,600 meters for a total of 10 laps, or 4,000 meters.


Milwaukee Brewers fire manager Ron Roenicke

MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers have fired manager Ron Roenicke.

President and general manager Doug Melvin announced the move Sunday night, hours after the team's 5-3 victory over the Cubs in Chicago. The team said it will announce a replacement Monday.

The Brewers are a major league-worst 7-18 after a 2-13 start.

Martins scores twice, Dempsey adds another as Sounders roll

NEW YORK (AP) — Obafemi Martins scored twice, Clint Dempsey had a goal and an assist and the Seattle Sounders beat New York City FC 3-1 on Sunday night.

Seattle (4-2-1) won its third straight game — and fourth in its last five — while NYCFC (0-5-2) had its winless streak reach seven matches.

Martins ran down a through ball and slotted a breakaway goal in the 23rd minute. He won another 1-on-1 battle with goalkeeper Josh Saunders in the 66th minute when he rolled in a goal after Dempsey's cleaver back-heel pass.

Spanish Queen wins $200,000 Honeymoon Stakes at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) — Spanish Queen won the $200,000 Honeymoon Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by 1 1/2 lengths Sunday at Santa Anita.

Ridden by Brice Blanc, Spanish Queen ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.24 and paid $8, $4.60 and $3.80.

Sharla Rae returned $31 and $16 as the longest shot in the field at 48-1. Spirit of Xian was another 2 3/4 lengths back in third and paid $3.80 to show.

Spanish Queen sped through an opening two paths off the rail turning for home to earn her first stakes victory.

Lightning beat Canadiens 6-2 to take 2-0 series lead

MONTREAL (AP) — Steven Stamkos scored his first goal of the playoffs and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Montreal Canadiens 6-2 on Sunday night to take a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Nikita Kucherov scored twice, Valtteri Filppula, J.T. Brown and Victor Hedman added goals, and Ben Bishop made 27 saves for the Lightning.

Jeff Petry and Tom Gilbert scored for Montreal. Carey Price allowed the most goals he has all season, finishing with 18 saves.
