Reds righty Mike Leake has no-hitter through 6 against Phils

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Cincinnati Reds right-hander Mike Leake has a no-hitter through six innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Leake retired his first 11 batters Wednesday night before walking Chase Utley on a close 3-2 pitch in the fourth. Leake hopped off the mound, thinking it was strike three. He walked Carlos Ruiz in the sixth.

Leake has thrown 84 pitches and has five strikeouts. The other outs have been routine. Jeff Francoeur's liner to center to end the sixth was the hardest out.


Mets reinstate Gee from 15-day DL

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The New York Mets have reinstated right-hander Dillon Gee from the 15-day disabled list and he started Wednesday night's game against the San Diego Padres.

Gee, on the disabled list with a right groin strain retroactive to May 4, is 0-2 with a 3.86 ERA in five starts.

The Mets optioned infielder Danny Muno to Triple-A Las Vegas.

Bettman soothes worries over Coyotes, Panthers before Final

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Commissioner Gary Bettman sees few glaring problems with the NHL as the Stanley Cup Final gets underway in a model Sun Belt hockey market, and he is eager to soothe any worries about two of his league's other warm-weather teams.

Bettman insisted Wednesday night that the Arizona Coyotes and the Florida Panthers are in good shape, downplaying reports of financial troubles for the two struggling franchises.


Eli Tomac to miss rest of motocross season after injuries

Eli Tomac will miss the remainder of the motocross season after injuring both shoulders during a wreck over the weekend.

Tomac won the first five motos to sweep the season's first two weekends before being injured Saturday during his hometown race at Thunder Valley Motocross Park in Englewood, Colorado.

Mariners get Trumbo from Diamondbacks in 6-player trade

SEATTLE (AP) — The slumping Seattle Mariners have acquired Mark Trumbo from the Arizona Diamondbacks as part of a six-player trade in the hopes of boosting their struggling offense.

The teams announced the trade Wednesday after each had finished off a day game. The Mariners lost 3-1 to the Yankees, while the Diamondbacks beat Atlanta 9-8.

Seattle landed Trumbo and left-handed pitcher Vidal Nuno in exchange for catcher Welington Castillo, right-hander Dominic Leone and minor league prospects Gabby Guerrero and Jack Reinheimer.


US holds 1st training session in Canada for World Cup

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Alex Morgan was back for the U.S. national team's first practice in Canada in preparation for the Women's World Cup.

Morgan had been limited in practice and held out of the team's last three matches as a precaution because of a bone bruise in her left knee. During the brief part of training open to the media on Wednesday afternoon, Morgan appeared agile.

The United States will need her proven scoring ability as the team tries to win its third World Cup title, and first since 1999.


Louisville 7-footer Mahmoud out 4-6 weeks with knee injury

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Louisville sophomore 7-footer Anas Mahmoud is expected to miss 4 to 6 weeks after tearing the medial meniscus in his left knee.

The forward/center from Egypt will have surgery Thursday morning at Jewish Hospital East to repair the injury sustained when he twisted the knee while playing basketball. A school release on Wednesday said Mahmoud should be able to play with the Cardinals during their tour in Puerto Rico Aug. 10-17.

Mahmoud had 35 points, 41 rebounds and 20 blocks in 29 games with Louisville last season.
