Martinez throws 6 shutout innings, Rangers beat Rockies 6-3

SURPRISE, Ariz. (AP) — Nick Martinez threw six scoreless innings, Leonys Martin homered and the Texas Rangers beat the Colorado Rockies 6-3 on Thursday night.

Martinez, competing for the final vacancy in the Rangers' rotation, allowed five hits and walked one. He struck out four, throwing 54 strikes in 74 pitches, and lowered his ERA to 0.84 in three spring appearances. He has allowed one run over 9 2-3 innings.

Martinez went 5-12 with a 4.55 ERA as a rookie last year, making 24 starts and five relief appearances.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Perfect and pulverizing. Kentucky made West Virginia's press look pathetic.

Trey Lyles scored 14 points, Andrew Harrison added 13 and the unbeaten Wildcats, chasing history and a ninth national title, rolled to a 78-39 victory over the Mountaineers on Thursday night in the Midwest Regional semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.


Stanford's Nolan breaks US 200 IM record at NCAA meet

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Stanford's David Nolan broke his own U.S. record in the 200-yard individual medley Thursday night on the opening day of the NCAA meet, finishing in 1 minute, 39.98 seconds.

Nolan shattered his mark of 1:40.07.

"It feels pretty good," Nolan said about breaking the 1:40 barrier. "It's always been a goal, ever since high school. Tonight, it was really fun to actually have it happen."

Texas led the team standings with 171 points. California was second at 119, followed by Florida at 108.


Pavelec stops 39 shots to lead Jets past Canadiens, 5-2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Ondrej Pavelec made 39 saves for his sixth consecutive win, leading the Winnipeg Jets to a 5-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night.

Mark Scheifele and Jim Slater each had a goal and an assist and Blake Wheeler, Dustin Byfuglien, and Adam Lowry also scored for the Jets.

Dustin Tokarski stopped 17 of 22 shots for the Canadiens, who were resting starter Carey Price. Andrei Markov and Brendan Gallagher scored for Montreal.


Ilyasova scores 34 points, Bucks beat Pacers 111-107

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Ersan Ilyasova had a career-high 34 points and the Milwaukee Bucks held off the Indiana Pacers 111-107 on Thursday night.

Khris Middleton added 17 points and Giannis Antetokounmpo had 16 for the Bucks. They have won two straight after breaking a six-game losing streak.

George Hill missed a potential tying 3-pointer in the closing seconds for Indiana.

C.J. Miles scored 26 points, Hill added 24 and C.J. Watson had 23 for the Pacers. They were without forward David West because of an allergic reaction.


Trouble for Mercedes and Hamilton at Malaysian FP

SEPANG, Malaysia (AP) — Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton suffered an engine failure in Friday's opening practice session for the Malaysian Grand Prix while his teammate Nico Rosberg set the fastest time.

Hamilton pulled off the track around 30 minutes into the 90-minute session, and radioed back to the pit-wall that "there was a click in the rear, the gears still worked but I stopped the car like you told me to, but I would have made it back."

His engineer replied "we are a bit worried about this because it's a race engine."


Rangers clinch playoff spot with 5-1 win over Senators

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Chris Kreider had two goals and an assist and the New York Rangers clinched a playoff spot with a 5-1 win over the Ottawa Senators on Thursday night.

Dan Boyle, Mats Zuccarello and Tanner Glass also scored for the Rangers, who have 101 points.

Cam Talbot made 23 saves for New York, which handed Ottawa's Andrew Hammond his first regulation-time loss.

Hammond allowed five goals on 22 shots and is 14-1-1 to start his NHL career.


Leo Manzano wins 800 meters in Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano won the 800 meters in 1 minute, 46.63 seconds Thursday to break his own Texas Relays and Mike A. Myers Stadium record.

Manzano set the previous mark of 1:47.34 last year.

Mary Goldkamp set a Texas Relays record in the women's 3,000 steeplechase at 10:04.24.


Pujols hits 3-run homer, Angels beat Cubs 8-4

MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Albert Pujols hit a three-run homer and Jered Weaver struck out eight as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Chicago Cubs 8-4 Thursday.

Cubs left-hander Travis Wood homered off Weaver leading off the fifth as a pinch hitter. Wood hit three homers last season. He pitched Wednesday.

Weaver gave up four runs — three earned — and six hits in 5 1-3 innings.

Mike Olt hit a two-run homer and a triple for the Cubs.


Panthers topple reeling Leafs 4-1

TORONTO (AP) — Brandon Pirri scored twice and the Florida Panthers earned a 4-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday night.

The loss was the seventh straight for Toronto, which is 6-28-3 in 2015.

Roberto Luongo delivered a solid performance in goal and Jonathan Huberdeau, Steven Kampfer and Pirri scored second-period goals to put Florida in front. Pirri added a late empty-netter for his 20th of the season.
