Alex Ovechkin scratched from Capitals' lineup

WASHINGTON (AP) — NHL goals leader Alex Ovechkin was scratched from the Washington Capitals' lineup Thursday night against the streaking Minnesota Wild.

The Capitals said Ovechkin, who missed the morning skate, is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

He leads the league with 43 goals and is tied with linemate Nicklas Backstrom for the points lead with (67. Ovechkin scored two goals in each of Washington's last two games, both wins.

Kershaw efficient in spring debut for Dodgers

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Clayton Kershaw retired all six batters he faced in his spring debut, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Chicago White Sox 6-1 on Thursday.

Kershaw struck out three, including White Sox slugger Jose Abreu looking on a slow curve.

"It felt good. The first one is just good to get out there and make sure you feel good physically," Kershaw said. "The results are obviously something that you look for, but maybe not the most important thing.

Lawsuit alleges Nashville center Ribeiro assaulted nanny

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Mike Ribeiro's former nanny in Texas is suing the Predators center for assaulting her and his wife for threatening her in 2012.

The lawsuit contains no specific details except the woman alleges Ribeiro caused "body injury." But her attorney Larry Friedman told The Associated Press on Thursday that his client was sexually assaulted by Ribeiro, though she did not immediately go to authorities.

Maryland-Eastern Shore turns back Morgan State 89-76

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) — Devin Martin led five players in double figures with 17 points on Thursday and Maryland-Eastern Shore wrapped up the regular season with its most wins in 41 years with an 89-76 win over Morgan State.

Dominique Elliott added 15 points, Mike Myers had 13, Devon Walker 11 and Ryan Andino 10 for the Hawks (18-13, 11-6 Mid-Eastern Athletic). Maryland-Eastern Shore has not won 18 games since going 27-2 in 1973-74.

Cedric Blooms had 17 points and Torin Childs-Harris 15 for the Bears (7-23, 5-11).

Vogelsong allows slam in Giants' win; Hunter Pence hurt

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Ryan Vogelsong gave up a grand slam to Kyle Schwarber, the Cubs first pick of last June's draft, but the San Francisco Giants rallied to beat a Chicago split-squad 8-6 on Thursday.

Giants' outfielder Hunter Pence left the game after getting hit by a pitch in the sixth inning.

Jeremy Affeldt allowed a run in one inning as the Giants won their first in three exhibition games between the teams.

Palmer restructures contract, aims to be ready for OTAs

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer says he has restructured his contract to help with the team's salary cap status with the aim of making a good team better come the free agency period.

Palmer, recovering from surgery to repair a torn ACL, says he "is doing great," throwing the ball five days a week, and hopes to be ready for OTAs this summer.

Regardless, he says he will be "ready to rock 'n' roll" by training camp.

Palmer says "the sky's the limit" for the Cardinals next season.

Timberwolves waive forward Robinson, claim center Hamilton

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have waived forward Glenn Robinson III to make room for center Justin Hamilton.

The Wolves claimed Hamilton off waivers Thursday. The 24-year-old Hamilton appeared in 24 games for the Miami Heat this season, averaging 2.8 points and 2.0 rebounds.

Hamilton was traded to New Orleans on Feb. 19 but did not appear in a game for the Pelicans. He was waived Tuesday.

With starting center Nikola Pekovic struggling with a sore right ankle, the Wolves needed some depth in the front court.

Iowa's Aaron White closing out career

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Senior forward Aaron White arrived in Iowa City as a scrawny kid that few outside of suburban Cleveland had ever heard of.

He'll leave as one of the greatest players the Hawkeyes have ever had.

White's career with Iowa has far exceeded even his own modest expectations. From posting a double-double in his freshman debut to averaging 23.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in his last three games, White has been a key cornerstone for coach Fran McCaffery during his five-year tenure.

The rivalry between Harvard and Yale is moving indoors, where the schools will play Friday night for basketball bragging rights and a chance to all-but clinch an Ivy League championship.

This year's matchup has more on the line than any meeting in decades — if not ever.

Cueto makes debut, Badenhop hit hard as Indians win 9-3

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) — Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto made his spring debut and allowed one hit and struck out two in two scoreless innings on Thursday.

But reliever Burke Badenhop got hit hard in his Reds debut, giving up five runs while retiring only two batters and the Cleveland Indians pulled away to a 9-3 victory.

Badenhop allowed Jose Ramirez's two-run single and Yan Gomez's two-run homer during Cleveland's five-run fifth inning. The reliever gave up five hits and walked a batter.
