Ohio credentialing system is meant to aid disaster response

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio program intended to strengthen disaster response is adding a credentialing system to make it easier for certain private-sector partners to deliver supplies and medication in restricted areas during an emergency.

Officials say participating private-sector partners will be vetted by Ohio Homeland Security. Then law enforcement officers controlling access to a disaster area will be able to use a shared database to verify credentials for people associated with those partners.


Cincinnati mayor, university honoring slain officer

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnatians are urged to wear blue to honor a police officer killed in a shootout with a suspect, as a university honors the officer by offering free tuition to his sons.

Mayor John Cranley asks residents of Cincinnati and the region to wear blue on Friday when Cincinnati officer Sonny Kim's funeral services are scheduled. Cranley also asks that U.S. flags in the region be flown at half-staff until Kim's funeral.


2 brothers die after kayak goes over dam in northern Ohio

UPPER SANDUSKY, Ohio (AP) — Investigators say one of two brothers who had been kayaking on a river in northwest Ohio jumped back in the water when his brother went over a low head dam.

Neither one of them survived.

Police in Upper Sandusky say their bodies were found in the Sandusky River after the accident Sunday night.

Investigators with Ohio's watercraft division say that one of the brothers was on shore with a woman when he saw his brother go over the dam.


Ohio motorists see lower gas prices to start work week

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio motorists are seeing lower prices at the pump to start the work week.

A gallon of regular gas in Ohio was averaging $2.73 in Monday's survey from auto club AAA, the Oil Price Information Service and WEX Inc. That's down 10 cents from a week ago.

Ohio gas prices also remain significantly cheaper than last year at this time, when prices were averaging $3.75 per gallon.

Average prices in Ohio were below the nation's average, which was $2.79 per gallon on Monday.


Ohio exotic animal owner makes new bid to get back animals

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) — The owner of six tigers and four other exotic animals seized by Ohio is making another attempt to get them back.

He's asked a judge to order the immediate return of the animals to his sanctuary near Toledo.

Kenny Hetrick says the state isn't properly caring for the animals and they've developed health problems.

Two state veterinarians dispute those claims. They say the animals aren't in any danger and that a few minor injuries have been treated since the animals were seized in January.


2nd Ohio teen found dead after attempted swim rescue

PERRSYVILLE, Ohio (AP) — Authorities say they've recovered the body of a 16-year-old boy who'd been missing since trying to rescue a swimmer late last week.

The Ashland County Sheriff's Office says the teen boy's body was discovered Sunday afternoon after crews searched the area most of the weekend.

The boy and a 16-year-old girl were trying to help in a rescue Friday near the Pleasant Hill Dam where a group had been swimming. The sheriff's office said the body of the 16-year-old girl was found about a mile away from the area Friday evening.


Father, son drown after northeast Ohio kayaking outing

LISBON, Ohio (AP) — Police say a boy and his father have died and a teen has been hospitalized after the three got caught in a current following a kayaking outing in northeast Ohio.

Lisbon Police Chief Michael Abraham says the two boys had been rinsing mud off their shoes around 6 p.m. Sunday after kayaking with the 44-year-old man in Lisbon's Little Beaver Creek when the man's 10-year-old son got caught in the current. The 14-year-old tried to help the 10-year-old, but got caught himself.


Cincinnati gun violence plan delayed after officer's death

CINCINNATI (AP) — Cincinnati police say a plan to counter a surge in gun violence in the city will be delayed following the death of a police officer in a shootout.

Chief Jeffrey Blackwell says the 90-day plan that was set to take effect Sunday will be delayed at least two weeks. He says the death of Officer Sonny Kim and the need to focus on his services required the delay.


Police: Man throws airsoft gun at cops, uses son as shield

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Police say a 27-year-old man was arrested in northeast Ohio after he threw an airsoft gun at officers and used his son as a shield to keep them away.

The Repository newspaper in Canton reports (http://bit.ly/1MZpFQ6 ) police were called for a man threatening to kill himself around 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

Authorities say the Canton man threw a handgun at officers, who didn't realize it was an airsoft gun. He then used his young son as a shield to keep police away from him.


Man suffers burns in explosion at his northeast Ohio home

LYNDHURST, Ohio (AP) — A man has been hospitalized with significant burns after a gas line exploded in his northeast Ohio home.

Fire officials say it happened around 5 p.m. in Lyndhurst. Fire Capt. David Young says the man told officials he was working on a gas appliance in the basement of his home before the explosion.

Young says the man was taken to Hillcrest Hospital before being transferred to MetroHealth Medical Center with burns. The homeowner's wife was also home during the explosion, but escaped unharmed.
