With Easter just around the corner parents may be looking to purchase baby chicks for their children. The local health department is saying although they are adorable , they could be dangerous.

According to the Centers for Disease Control since the 1990's, 45 salmonella outbreaks have been linked to live poultry. The Zanesville Muskingum County Health Department's Kristen Baker says people handling live animals are susceptible to the disease especially young children.

The Animal Shelter Society and PetSmart are teaming up to help find homes for Muskingum County animals. The adoption event will take place this Saturday and Sunday starting at noon at PetSmart in the Northepoint Center Plaza in Zanesville.

If you did get for a pet for Christmas, and it's more work than you initially thought it would be, rescue coordinator at the Muskingum County Animal Shelter Society, Charity Stevens, says to give your pet some time to adjust before taking it to the shelter.

The Animal Shelter Society of Muskingum County is having a Christmas open house this Saturday at 10 a.m. Executive Director Jody Murray says the first 12 adoptions of the day will be half price, and says the open house will be a full day of fun events for the entire family.

"We're gonna have a craft for children throughout the day and then also, our shelter vet, Dr. Kelly Lewis, is gonna do a couple presentations," said Murray. "One at 11 a.m. and one at 1 p.m....

The Animal Shelter Society of Muskingum County is a private, non-profit agency, meaning it doesn't receive any funding from the government or tax dollar money. So whenever an animal comes into the shelter, it gets all of it's needed vaccinations and medical care at the cost of the shelter.

The Animal Shelter has an abundance of beagles and they have a special price of $50-$75 which includes spaying and neutering. Also, a variety of cats are half price at $30 dollars this month.

Marion Thompson and her five exotic animals arrived at their Kopchak Road Farm at 12:45 Friday afternoon.  Thompson drove the pick-up truck and trailer to her home from the Columbus Zoo.  She parked next to the cages that will house the animals and some employees unloaded the creatures.

The six exotic animals rescued from Terry Thompson’s Farm in Muskingum County will have to stay at the Columbus Zoo. The Office of Governor John Kasich says the State Department of Agriculture has ordered the animals to be quarantined. Officials want to be sure the animals are disease free before they are released.  That is instead of transferring them from the Columbus Zoo to Thompson's wife who was considering taking them to a preserve near Mansfield where she now lives....

In the hot summer months, the Muskingum County Animal Shelter wants to make sure yout pets stay safe.

Executive Director, Larry Hostetler, says if your pet is going to be outside for an extended period of time, make sure they have access to plenty of cold water and shade. He says one sign that Fido needs a break from the heat, is panting.

One local middle school is making sure man's best friend and other animals are not forgotten this holiday season.

Grover Cleveland middle school art students are making Christmas tree ornaments to help raise money for the Muskingum County animal shelter. 100 percent of the donations this holiday season will go right back to the shelter.
